
BUENA VISTA, VA – The York College volleyball squad had their 2019 campaign come to an end on Tuesday night as the Spartans fell to Southern Virginia, 3-1, in the Capital Athletic Conference quarterfinals in Buena Vista, VA. The Spartans suffered through a rough final month of the seasons as numerous injuries decimated a team that was playing great heading into the month of October.
The Spartans end the campaign with a mark of 14-17 as they finished the season with a six-match losing streak. The Knights advance to face top-seeded Christopher Newport in Thursday's CAC semifinals in Newport News.

How It Happened
• The Knights seized the early set one lead as they push out to a 12-6 advantage early. York ripped off three straight points but the Knights responded with a 7-2 run as they had a 19-11 bulge. York battled and trimmed the SVU lead to 21-18. Three would be as close as York would get as the Knights hung on for a 25-22 set one win.
• Set two was very close throughout most of the set. There were five ties over the first 24 points before York scored three straight points to take a 15-12 lead. The Knights came back to eventually tie the set at 18. The set would be again tied at 20 but the Spartans would finish the set on a five-point run to knot the match at one.
• The third set started out close as the teams were tied at nine. The Knights went on a 5-1 run to take a 14-10 lead. The Spartans cut the lead to three but that's as close as they would get as SVU would pull away for the 25-16 lead to take command of the match.
• York started off the fourth set with four straight points to race out to a quick lead. The Knights responded with an 11-4 spurt to take control of the set. The Knights slowly started to pull away and the Spartans could never really recover as SVU ended the Spartan season with a 25-16 set four win.

The match was the final Capital Athletic Conference match for the Spartan volleyball program as York is leaving the CAC next fall and heading to the MAC … the Spartans finish CAC play with a mark of 21-23 all-time in the tournament … York is now 4-5 against the Knights … it's the first time York has faced SVU in the CAC tournament … SVU finished 2-1 against the Spartans as the home team won each match … senior Madyson Whitcomb finished her career as the all-time leader in attack percentage (.334) while she also finished first in blocks per set (1.02), second in block assists (269), third in total blocks (363), and fourth solo blocks (94) … senior Gabby Emeigh finished her Spartan career second all-time in career service aces (205), fourth in service attempts (1,555), sixth in service aces per set (0.51), seventh in assists (1,829) and tenth in assists per set (4.52).
