Salisbury Tops Spartans in Three on Wednesday Night

YORK, PA – The York College volleyball squad suffered a 3-0 Capital Athletic Conference loss to Salisbury University on Wednesday night in Wolf Gymnasium. The Sea Gulls swept the season series with York as Salisbury won the first meeting of the year 3-2 in Salisbury.

How It Happened

• The first set saw the two squads go back and forth with neither team able to forge any momentum. The largest lead was three over the first 27 points of the match. Salisbury finally gained some momentum and built their lead to four at 16-12. York scored four of the next five points to get to within one at 17-16. Salisbury quickly scored three straight to push the lead back to four. York made one final run, cutting the Salisbury lead to two at 21-19 but that would be as close as they would get, falling in set number one 25-21.

• York got off to a good start in set two as they did not trail until the Sea Gulls took their first lead at 9-8. Salisbury built the lead up to four three times and eventually increased the lead to eight at 21-13. York cut it to four points twice but again, couldn't get over the hump as Salisbury went up 2-0 with the 25-20 set two win.

• York fell behind early in set three as they trailed the entire set. York kept it close early but Salisbury went on a 7-1 run to take a 13-6 lead. Salisbury eventually pushed the lead to 12 before settling for the 25-17 set three victory to close out the match.

The Spartans fall to 15-33 all-time against the Sea Gulls as Salisbury has won three of the last five meetings and both meetings in 2019 … the match was the final regular season match between the two schools as Capital Athletic Conference opponents as the Spartans depart the CAC and head for the MAC next fall … the Spartans again struggled in the attack as they hit just .009 in the loss with 28 kills and 27 errors … York has a combined 54 kills and 55 errors in their last two games, a pair of 3-0 losses … York is now 7-7 in matches decided in three games … York served at 93.2% for the game and that's the 11th time in their 27 matches they have served at over 93% in a game … the Spartans are now 1-5 since they lost senior All-CAC middle hitter Madyson Whitcomb to a season-ending injury.

The Spartans head back out on the road on Friday evening as they head to Newport News, Virginia as they face off against Christopher Newport in a Capital Athletic Conference match. The match is set for a 7:00 pm start. The Spartans will remain in Newport News on Saturday to face off against Washington & Lee in the final non-conference match of the year.
