Spartan Volleyball Returns Home with 3-0 Win

YORK, PA – The York College volleyball team won their second straight match as they downed Penn State Altoona 3-0 in non-conference action on Wednesday evening in York. York has won four of their last five matches as they improve to 8-8 overall.

How It Happened

• The Spartans fell behind early as the Lions jumped out to a 3-0 lead. The Spartans answered with a 7-0 run to seize control of the set. The Spartan lead vacillated between two and four points over the next 16 points. York pushed the lead to six on five occasions with the final time coming at 22-16. The Lions cut the lead to three before the Spartans settled for the 25-20 set one win.

• Altoona raced out to an early 6-1 lead in set two but the Spartans would quickly even the score at seven. The set would be tied again at 11, 12, 13, 16, and 17 before the Spartans ripped off an 8-1 run to close out the set.

• Set three was just like the first two sets as the Lions seized an early lead. York went on an 11-2 spurt to take a 13-7 lead. The Lions trimmed the lead to two at 13-11 but York pushed the lead to as high as six at 18-12. The Lions made one last push thanks to a 6-2 run but York closed out the set with a 5-1 run to close out the match.

York is now 8-3 all-time against Altoona as they have won two straight in the series … York banged out 12 service aces … it's the seventh time York has reached double figures in aces … York had four solo blocks, their highest totale since the September 12 win at Immaculata … York is now 4-4 in three set decisions … junior Tyler Williams had a season-high 12 kills in the win … junior libero Emily Pupo collected 17 kills her second-highest total in a three set match this year (22 vs. Stevenson) … freshman Abby Diehl had 29 assists in the win, her highest total in a three- set match this year … the Spartans played just their third home match of the season.

The Spartans head to Washington, DC to participate in the Peg Worthington Classic hosted by Gallaudet this weekend. The Spartans will face Christopher Newport in what will be the Capital Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Friday at 2:00 pm. York will then face Catholic University on Friday evening at 8:00 pm.
