#23 Captains Down Spartans In Friday Night Match

YORK, PA – The York College volleyball squad began their final weekend of the regular season with a 3-0 loss to #23 Christopher Newport University in Capital Athletic Conference action on Friday evening in York.

How It Happened:

• The Spartans got off to a good start in set one as they sprinted out to a 5-1 lead. The Captains bounced back and tied the set at 8-8. The Captains scored four of the next five points to take a 12-9 lead. The Spartans cut the lead to one at 13-12 but the Captains would quickly push the lead back to four. The Green and White kept the Captains within striking distance as the CNU lead didn't get above four. York battled back to tie the set at 21 but a Spartan service error kick started a game-clinching 4-0 run to give the visitors a 25-21 set one win.

• York got off to another solid start in set two with a 4-1 lead. After the teams traded a few points, CNU went on a 7-0 run as they took an 11-6 lead. The Captains would eventually push the lead to eight at 19-11. The Spartans scored six of the next seven points to trim their deficit to 20-17. The Captains responded by scoring five of the final six points of the set to take a 25-18 game two win.

• Set three proved to be the closest throughout the set. The squads were tied at four, five, and six before the Captains pushed out to a 14-10 lead. York bounced back with a 5-1 mini-run to tie the set at 15. The teams would be tied for a fifth and sixth time at 17 and again at 18. The Captains hit York with a quick 3-0 run to take a 21-18 lead. York cut their deficit to 21-20 on a Hannah Siaurusaitis block but CNU scored the final four points of the set to sweep the match.

The Spartans fall to 0-6 against CNU as they have lost all six by 3-0 scores … York had just 25 digs in the match, their second lowest total of the year (24 vs. Bard on September 1) … the loss snaps York's three game win streak and denied the Spartans their 20th win of the season … York is now 7-5 in matches decided by three sets … York falls to 9-2 at home, snapping a six match home win streak … York is now 6-3 in October.

York closes out the regular season on Saturday afternoon when they host the University of Mary Washington in a key Capital Athletic Conference contest. The match is slated for a 3:00 pm start.
