Spartan Block Party Carries Volleyball Past Elizabethtown

YORK, PA – The York College volleyball team made their 2017 home debut a successful one as the Green and White defeated Elizabethtown in four sets to earn the win on Monday night in York. York had a season high 30 block assists en route to the victory.

How It Happened

• The Blue Jays jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead to open the match. The Spartans went on a 7-2 run to tie the first set at seven. The Spartans would slowly build their lead to four at 17-13 and the lead would vacillate between two and four points until York ended the set on a 4-0 run to take the six-point first set win.

• The teams went back and forth early in the second set as it was tied at five through 10 points. The Blue Jays smacked the Spartans with a quick 5-0 run to forge a 10-5 lead. York cut the lead to three at 11-8 but the Blue Jays went on a 7-3 spurt to push the lead to 18-11. The Spartans could not get any closer than five the rest of the way as the Jays cruised to the 25-18 set two victory.

• The third set was a back-and-forth affair with neither team being able to assert themselves early. With the set tied at 10, the Spartans went on an 8-1 run to take an 18-11 lead. The advantage grew to a set-high nine (21-12) but Elizabethtown went on a 7-1 run, trimming the Spartan lead to 22-19. York scored three of the next five points to earn the 25-21 win.

• The fourth set was much like the first three as it was tightly played early on. The set was tied at six when the Spartans went on a 5-1 run to take the 11-7 lead. The Spartans would not trail the rest of the way. Elizabethtown cut the lead to one but York answered with four straight points. The lead was as big as seven at 20-13 and the hosts closed out the set and the match win.

The win snaps a two game losing streak against the Blue Jays … the teams will complete the home-and-home series when York heads to Elizabethtown on October 10 … the Spartans' 15 team blocks was a season high as was the 30 block assists for the match … York hit .164 for the match, their highest total in their last three matches … York had ten service errors and that's the fifth time in nine matches that the Spartans have had double figures in service errors … York had 60 digs for the match, their third highest total of the year … junior Alexis Harbold had 25 digs in the match and has 51 digs in the last eight sets she has played … Harbold has four matches this year with 20 digs or more … Eryn Brady's 10 kills are her second straight match with 10 kills and the third match this year with double digits in kills … Brady has hit .300 in her last two matches as she has 20 kills and five errors in 50 attemps.


Up Next

The Spartans head back on the road on Wednesday night as they travel to Gettysburg to face an undefeated Bullet squad at Bream Gymnasium. The match is slated for a 7:00 pm start.
