YORK, PA – The York College women's tennis team got back on the winning side of the ledger with a 5-2 win over Catholic University in a non-conference contest on Sunday afternoon at the Wisehaven Tennis Club in York. The match was moved indoors and played to result after rain rendered the Spartan Tennis Centre too wet to play.
The Spartans improved to 5-1 while the Cardinals fall to 3-2 for the fall campaign.
The Green and White captured two of the three doubles matches. The Catholic team of Brooke Simonson and Lauren Edwards edged Michaela Sentz and Gina Ligouri 8-6 in the first doubles match. York bounced back as Hannah Shinsky and Chloe Doyle earned an 8-3 second doubles win. Maisie Supp and Lauren Ostermann also picked up an 8-3 third doubles win as York took a 2-1 lead to singles play.
The Cardinals opened singles play with a Simonson win over Sentz in the first singles match. Ligouri had a fantastic match against Abby Cassidy in the second singles match as Ligouri won 6-7 (3), 6-2, 12-10. Supp followed with a nice 6-3, 6-3 win over Hanna Scali in the third singles match as the York lead grew to 4-2. Shinsky closed out the match with an 8-2 fourth singles win. Ostermann and Doyle didn't get to complete their singles matches due to the Spartans earning the decisive fifth win on Shinsky's victory.
The Spartans will close out their fall campaign with a trip to Virginia next weekend. The Spartans face Randolph in a non-conference match on Friday afternoon at 2:00 pm. York will then travel to Buena Vista to face Southern Virginia in a Capital Athletic Conference contest on Saturday at 11:30 am.
