BUENA VISTA, VA – The York College women's tennis team dropped a 5-0 decision to Southern Virginia in the quarterfinal round of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday in Buena Vista, Virginia. The Knights, who are the tournament's fourth seed, advance to face Mary Washington, the top seed, in Wednesday's CAC semifinals. The Knights are now 15-4 overall. The Spartans, who were the fifth seed in the tournament, fall to 8-6 overall.
The Knights captured all three doubles points to take the early lead. The first doubles match was hotly contested as SVU's Rachel Neeleman and Rachel Christensen combined to outlast Rachel Wagner and Gina Liguori 8-7. The Knights captured the second doubles point 8-2 while the Spartan combo of Chloe Doyle and Jessica Sherman fell in the third doubles match 8-4.
The Knights earned the two points needed to complete the match in singles play. Morgan Blount downed Doyle 6-0, 6-1 in the fifth singles match while Alyssa Sewell defeated Hannah Shinsky 6-0, 6-2 in the sixth singles match to clinch the win for the Knights.
The Spartans will close out their regular season on Sunday as they travel to Elizabethtown College to face the Blue Jays in a non-conference contest. The match is slated for a 12:00 pm start in Elizabethtown.
