YORK, PA – The York College men's wrestling team enters 2019-20 with high expectations after the Spartans went 13-3 last year. Head coach Duane Bastress enters his seventh year with a young and hungry team that is determined to continue the tradition of the Spartan wrestling program.
Bastress must replace his three national qualifiers including the program's first four-time All-American Greg Warner. However, the cupboard is far from bare as the Green and White returns a number of starters from last year's squad in addition to a crew of newcomers who should make an impact on the Green and White.
Weight Class Breakdowns:
125-Pounds: Sophomore Jared Kuhns returns to the squad after posting a record of 20-8 last winter. He replaces departed national qualifier Dylan Nuttall but Kuhns comes back firmly entrenched as this year's starter. Kuhns had three tech falls and one pin last year as he was first at last year's Monarch Invitational and second at the Ursinus Fall Brawl.
133-Pounds: Sophomore Michael Rubin opens the campaign as the starter for the Spartans. Rubin went 6-5 in 11 matches as a freshman for the Green and White. He opened the season with a fourth place finish at the Monarch Invitational. Junior Logan Fox and sophomore Tommy Luke will back up Rubin at 133.
141-Pounds: Sophomore Blake Shalbert heads into the season as the starter and he headlines one of the deeper class on the squad. Shalbert had 11 wins as a freshman with one major decision and a win by pin. He edged out junior Verlensky Joachim for the starting job as Joachim is moving up from 133 this season. Joachim was 9-7 as a sophomore at 133. Sophomore Jake McGrath, freshman Adam Leib, and freshman D'Andre McCray give the Spartans tremendous depth at the weight class.
149-Pounds: Junior Eric Schreck returns to the Spartan lineup after missing last season. Schreck was 6-10 as a freshman but comes back to the room ready to make an impact on the lineup. Sophomore Timmy Sparks, sophomore Robbie Fleming, and freshman Michael Fouts give York more quality depth. Sparks went 11-8 as a freshman last year while Fleming picked up four wins during his freshman year.
157-Pounds: Sophomore captain Eric Hutchinson returns to lead the way at 157-pounds after an injury shortened 2018-19 season. Hutchinson was limited to just 12 matches as he suffered a season-ending injury in the New Standard Invitational. Hutchinson, who retains sophomore eligibility, went 10-3 in his limited time on the mat last year. He is fully recovered and should be one of the top wrestlers in the region. He will be backed-up by freshman Edward Williams and freshman Nick Secor.
165-Pounds: Junior captain Jesse Rocco comes into his third year in the Green and White as the Spartans' top 165-pounder. Rocco piled up 16 wins last year including three major decisions, one tech fall and five wins via a pin. He finished fourth at the Monarch Invitational to start the year. Rocco will be backed up by sophomores Jason Litvak and Jake Hipps.
174-Pounds: Senior Jackson Drum returns to the Spartan line up as one of the most dynamic wrestlers in the program. Drum went 22-5 at 165 pounds last year as he moves up a weight class as a senior. Drum had a team-high 12 pins while he also had three major decisions. Drum has a career record of 63-24 as a Spartan. Sophomore Kyle Strazdus and freshman Joey Bunce give York outstanding depth at the weight class.
184-Pounds: The Spartans have a pair of wrestlers who are still competing for the starting nod at 184-pounds. Junior Ryan Doyle and sophomore Billy Myers are the two guys the Spartans will count on during the season. Doyle has had limited matches during his two years in the Green and White but has impressed the coaching staff heading into the year. Myers went 6-6 last year with four of his wins coming via a fall. His freshman campaign was cut short because of an injury.
197-Pounds: Sophomore Camden Farrow leads the way for the Spartans at 197 as he comes off a freshman year in which he went 12-9. He notched one major decision and four pins among his 12 wins. Farrow finished fourth in the New Standard Invitational. Junior Michael Reinhart and senior Matthew Cosh give the Spartans solid depth in the class.
285-Pounds: Senior Thomas Tabatneck headlines the Spartan heavyweight class after earning 11 wins as a junior for the Green and White. He had a pair of tech falls and four pins during the year. Freshman Jarrell Mayo and senior Julian Albero will push Tabatneck for the starting job.
The Spartans open up with three straight weekends on the road before their November 22 home opener against TCNJ. The Spartans will host the loaded New Standard Invitational on December 6 and 7 in their lone December event on the schedule.
York hosts a tri-match on January 4 and then hit the road for 26 days before returning home to host Gettysburg on January 30. The Spartans close out their home schedule on Friday, February 7 when they host Messiah on Senior Night.
