Kritzer, Flynn, and Spartan Squad Earn NWCA Academic Honors

YORK, PA – The York College wrestling team was recognized by the National Wrestling Coaches Association for their academic performance during the 2013-14 season as announced by the organization recently.

The Spartans, under first year head coach Duane Bastress, ranked 22nd in the nation with a team GPA of 3.281. York finished the year with a mark of 11-8; a great mark considering York started the dual meet season with a record of 1-5.

In addition to the team honors, sophomore Adam Kritzer (Herndon, Pa./Line Mountain) and freshman Ryan Flynn (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown) earned individual Scholar All-American honors. Kritzer is a nursing major who owns a 3.50 GPA while Flynn is a mechanical engineering major and boasts a 3.75 GPA.

"I am very proud of how this team responded in the wake of our first semester," said Bastress. "They showed such grit and determination each and everyday both on and off the mat. The guys came in and put the work in to achieve the goals that we originally set for the program at the beginning of the season. This was evident as they finished 22nd as a team academically in the nation and we had two Scholar All Americans. I know that the guys are already back in the weight room working hard for next season and eager to reach the goals that we have set as a program and individuals. We will have a chance to be a team to watch out for in 2014-15!"

Kritzer had a very good second year in the Green and White as he accumulated a mark of 22-10 with five major decisions and three pin fall wins. Kritzer competed for the Spartans at 157 pounds and recorded the fourth most victories on the team for the season.

"Adam has bought into what we want our student-athletes to be in every aspect, hard workers both on and off the mat and as well as the classroom," says Bastress. "His outstanding work ethic is shown as he has achieved a GPA of 3.5 in nursing. He also showed his grit and determination as he wrestled in our regional tournament with a broken hand.  He is the true meaning of what it means to be a Spartan!"

Flynn had an impressive freshman year as he went 23-13 at 133 pounds. He had one major, one tech fall and five pin fall wins. Flynn placed sixth at 133 at the highly competitive Mideast Regional in York.

"Ryan has nothing but a pleasure to have in the program this season," states Bastress. "He is everything that we want in a Spartan wrestler. He works hard everyday both on and off the mat. It showed as he not only had 23 wins but also became one of my first two Scholar All Americans with an outstanding GPA of 3.75 in mechanical engineering. The next three years are going to be fun to coach and watch Ryan!"

Bastress is slated to return all 10 starters for next year as York had one of the youngest rosters in Division III this season.
