WILLIAMSPORT, PA – The York College wrestling squad had a hard-to-swallow start to the 2014 Budd Whitehill Duals as the #8 Cortland State Red Dragons edged the Spartans 22-19 in come-from-behind fashion on Friday morning in Williamsport, PA.
The Spartans fall to 3-6 overall while the Red Dragons improve to 4-2 with the narrow win.
The Red Dragons got on top early with a pin fall win at 125 but the Spartans came roaring back. Sophomore Trevor Baez Hernandez (Bendersville, Pa./Biglerville) posted an important and dramatic 7-5 sudden victory at 133 pounds, getting York on the board.
Junior Joey Giaccio (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) then notched a 13-2 major decision over Anthony Battista at 141 pounds. Junior Drew Spector (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) kept it rolling for the Spartans with a 6-0 win at 149 pounds. Sophomore Adam Kritzer (Herndon, Pa./Line Mountain) posted a 14-6 major decision win at 157 pounds as the Spartan lead grew to 14-6.
The Red Dragons halted the Spartan run with a 6-3 win at 165 and then notched an 11-2 major decision at 174, cutting the Spartan lead to 14-13.
Spartan freshman 184 pounder Nick Zak (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Liberty) picked up a much needed 17-2 tech fall in his match against Brian Bulger as the Spartans led 19-13 with two weight classes left.
Cortland's Joey Giaramita notched a pin fall win at 197, tying the match at 19.
The Red Dragons then finished off the team win with a hard fought 5-3 win over Mike Spencer (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Townshipwre) in the heavyweight bout.
The Spartans will now face the loser of the Williams/Wisconsin Stevens Point match on Friday afternoon at 2:00 pm.
