YORK, PA – The York College women's golf squad captured the championship of the Inaugural Spartan Invitational at the Country Club of York on Sunday. The Spartans finished first of 11 teams as they cruised to the tournament championship by 25 strokes.
The Spartans finished the two-day tournament with a score of 643 as they shot a 318 on Saturday followed by a 325 on Sunday. Gettysburg finished second at 668 followed by Marymount (675) in third, Alvernia (696) in fourth and Shenandoah (733) in fifth.
The Spartans were led by freshman Anna Moore as she finished tied for second with a two-day total of 157. She fired a three-over-par 76 on Saturday followed by an 81 on Sunday. Sophomore Emma Harding was the next Spartan finisher as she was tied for fifth with a score of 162. Harding shot an 80 on Saturday followed by an 82 on Sunday.
Freshmen Jordan Koller and Shelby Tapman finished tied at 163, good for an eighth-place finish. Koller shot an 80 on Saturday followed by an 83 on Sunday. Tapman flipped those scores as she shot an 83 on Saturday followed by an 80 on Sunday. Her Sunday round was the best Spartan score of the day.
Lindsey Bonner was York's fifth tournament participant as she finished 18th with a two-day score of 164. Bonner shot matching 82's as she finished tied for 10th in the 54-player field.
The Spartans had five other players participate in the tournament as individual players. Freshman Brooke Burnette led that group of Spartans as she shot a 179 to finish 19th. Bethany Snodgrass finished two strokes behind Burnette at 181. Brenna Keener was the third finishers among the Spartan individuals as she shot a score of 185 to finish tied for 24th. Sophomores KeriAnne Mahoney and Paige Gillespie were York's final two finishers as Mahoney shot a total of 198 while Gillespie finished at 201.
The tournament title is the third tournament title of the year and the fifth in two-year history of the Spartan program. The Spartans also won the Green Turtle Invitational on October 13 and the Revolutionary Collegiate Golf Classic on October 14.
The Spartans return to action Saturday, April 13 as the Spartans head to the Gettysburg Spring Invitational at the Hanover Country Club in Hanover, Pa. The two-day tournament kicks off Saturday at 12:00 pm.
