YORK, PA – The York College women's basketball team used a big third quarter to put the game out of reach along with four Spartans scoring in double-figures to top La Roche in the semifinal match of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic 74-58 on Friday night.

• The Spartans came out locked in on the defensive end early forcing eight first quarter turnovers that they turned into 10 of their 21 points. On the offensive end, York shot 53.3% from the floor and 60% from three along with a perfect 2-for-2 from the line to take a 21-15 lead after the first period.
• La Roche came out in the second quarter and hit back-to-back threes and opened up a 7-0 run to take a 22-21 lead early in the period. The Spartan deficit was short-lived when Kayla Ferris knocked down her third three-pointer of the game and went 3-for-3 from deep in the first half. Ferris led the way with 13 as York went into halftime up a dozen, 42-30.
• York came out of the locker room and blitzed the Red Hawks opening the second half on an 11-0 run that included six from Katie McGowan as she started to take over the game in the paint. McGowan poured in eight points in the period and the Spartans extended the lead up to 23 by the end of the third stanza and led 63-40 after three quarters.
• More of the same on the offensive end for the Spartans in the fourth quarter and coasted to a 74-58 victory and advance to the championship game on Saturday.

The Spartans are now 2-0 all time against the Red Hawks with the other meeting coming back on March 7, 2014 in the NCAA Division III Tournament first round … the York offense scored a season-high 74 points and was the first time they topped the 70-point mark on the year … they also shot a season best from the field at 47.4%, 46.7% from three, and 76.5% from the free throw line … York is now 2-0 when leading at the halftime break … the Spartans have been a third-quarter team so far this year as they have now won the third period in three of their four games this season … Kayla Ferris had a career day as she tied her career high in points (17), set a new career high in steals (7) and assists (5) … senior Katie McGowan recorded 16 points and has now scored double-digit points in all four games this year … senior forward Logynn Fuller went 3-for-5 from deep in the win and has made at least one three-pointer in every game this year … the win was York's first home victory this year … the Spartans are looking to win back-to-back Coaches vs. Cancer Classic titles with a win Saturday … York has advanced to the title game in the tournament for 12 consecutive seasons.
The Spartans will take on the SUNY-Geneseo Knights in the championship game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic on Saturday. Tip off scheduled for 3:00 pm following the consolation match in Wolf Gym.
