Spartans Heading to Amherst for Sweet 16

YORK, PA – The York College women's basketball team will travel to Amherst College in Massachusetts to participate in the 2012 NCAA Division III Sweet 16. The Spartans square off against Amherst in the round of the 16. The Lord Jeffs are the top ranked team in the nation, as they are 29-0.

Emmanuel (24-6) and Kings (24-5) join Amherst and the Spartans in the regional. Game times will be determined on Monday.

The Spartans advanced to the round of 16 courtesy of a pair of impressive wins at the Juniata regional. The Spartans rolled past St. Vincent, 86-66, on Friday night. The Green and White then earned their way to the Amherst sectional with a 90-81 win over the host Eagles.

The Lord Jeffs, who are the defending Division III National Champions, downed St. Joseph's of Brooklyn 84-30 in the opening round of the tournament. Then earned their ticket to the Sweet 16 courtesy of a 61-48 win over Babson.

Kings earned their way to the regional with a 56-42 win over Oneonta State followed by one of the biggest upsets in the tournament as they downed #8 William Paterson 64-63 on Saturday evening. The Monarchs will face an Emmanuel team that downed Hartwick 68-61 in the first round before advancing to Amherst courtesy of a 57-52 win over Rhode Island College.

The winner of the Amherst regional will advance to the Final Four in Holland, Michigan on March 16 and 17. The Amherst regional winner will square off against the Mary Washington sectional winner on the left side of the bracket.
