Spartan Bats Go Cold In Doubleheader Sweep

YORK, PA. – The York College softball team had their offense go cold as they dropped their first two games of the conference season to Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened

• After five scoreless innings of the pitcher's duel, the Eagles would finally break the deadlock in the top of the sixth inning. Madi Marsden would lead things off with a walk and advance to second on a sacrifice bunt. Hannah Bruns would shoot a single in to right field and a Spartan error would bring around Marsden to score the first run of the game and Bruns would advance to third on the error. Ginger Lewis would get the next two batters to pop out to shortstop to keep the score at just 1-0.

• The Spartans would get a runner on in the bottom of the sixth via a walk but would be unable to advance the runner any further and trailed 1-0 headed to the seventh. Lewis would surrender a lead-of double to Daylah Sawyer but would leave her stranded at second retiring the next three Eagles to keep the deficit at one.

• Hibbs would down the Spartans 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh completing the one-hit shutout as York fell 1-0 in their conference opener.

How It Happened

• The Eagles got on the board early in game two on a pair of hits. Hannah Bruns led off the game with a single up the middle and would advance to second on a sac bunt. Bruns would come in to score on an RBI-double off the center field wall off the bat of Danielle Newman as UMW took the early 1-0 lead.

• The Eagles would add another run in the top of the fourth. Caroline Bird would start the frame off with a double to left field before moving to third on a sac bunt. Courtney Shea would single to center field to bring in Bird and UMW extended their lead to 2-0.

• Mary Washington would strike again in the top of the sixth taking advantage of a Spartan error. After Morgan Mumford reached base on a Spartan miscue, she would advance to second on a passed ball and then to third base on a ground out. Mumford would score on a single up the middle by Maggie Mrowka to push the Eagle lead to 3-0. The Eagles would try to add another by Madison Brumagin would gun an Eagle runner down at the plate to keep the score at 3-0 after five and a half innings of play.

• York would answer in the bottom of the sixth getting their first run on the day as Alyssa Harhigh would launch a solo blast out to left field as the Spartans would cut the led to 3-1.

• The Eagles would start the seventh inning with a nine-pitch at bat by Bird that ended in a single to center field. She would move to second on a ground ball and then come in to score taking advantage of a Spartan error off the bat of Madi Marsden to extend the lead to 4-1. The Eagles would add runs on a wild pitch, another Spartan error, and a two-run homer by Mwroka as UMW led 8-1 with three outs left go play. Juliet Truslow would strike out the side in the bottom of the seventh as York suffered the sweep to open CAC play falling to UMW 8-1.

 

SPARTAN NOTES:

The Spartans are now 37-53 all-time against the Eagles … the loss in game one snapped a three-game winning streak in the series against Mary Washington … the one hit was the fewest in a game for the Spartans … this was also just the second time the York offense had been shut out all year … freshman Alyssa Harhigh hit her team-leading ninth homerun in the game-two loss … York has committed an error in all but three games this season … Ginger Lewis tossed her sixth complete game on the season and now has a 1.22 ERA on the year … York is now 3-3 at home this season.

The Spartans are back in action tomorrow as they travel to take on McDaniel in non-conference action. First pitch scheduled for 1:30 pm Sunday in Westminster, Maryland.
