Spartans Earn Tough Split With Eastern

CLERMONT, FLA. – The York College softball team played a pair of close games on their way to a doubleheader split against Pennsylvania rival Eastern University on gameday four in Florida. York won the first matchup 6-2 but fell 4-3 in the nightcap.

How It Happened

• York got on the board first in the top half of the second inning taking advantage of a trio of walks that loaded the bases. Madison Brumagin would come up clutch with a two-out single up the middle to bring in Mia Ruffalo and give the Spartans the early lead.

Shyla Pastore kept the Eagles off the scoreboard after keeping them hitless through the first three innings of the contest. Eastern would eventually break their hitless streak with one out in the bottom of the fourth when Taylor Crown and Sabrina Thomas got back-to-back singles. York would bring in Taylor Lindsay out of the bullpen who shut down the Eagles threat keeping them scoreless through four innings.

• In the fifth, Elle Meyer would lead things off with a single and then stealing second base. Pastore would sacrifice advancing Meyer to third who would come in on an Alyssa Harhigh single the next batter. Harhigh would later steal second and come in to score on a throwing error giving the Spartans a three-run advantage. In the bottom half of the stanza, Eastern would get a run back on an RBI groundout from Rebecca Howard after a leadoff triple off the stick of Samantha Albertson.

• York would get some insurance the next two innings scoring on a failed pickoff attempt in the sixth and notching two more runs in the seventh inning on three-straight this from Lindsay, Joanna Marmo, and Ruffalo. The Eagles would manage to get one back in the bottom of the seventh but the Spartans held on to their fifth-straight win, 6-2.

How It Happened

• Game two would start with the Eagles getting on the board first capitalizing on a lead-off walk in inning number one. Rebecca Howard would walk and advance to second on a sacrifice bunt and then score on a double from Emily Loomis to give Eastern the early 1-0 lead.

• The Eagles would add a pair of runs the following inning on a single from Madeline Iswalt and an RBI groundout by Loomis.

• After Eastern added another run in the top of the fourth, the Spartans would manufacture a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning taking advantage of some Eagle miscues. Joanna Marmo led the inning off with a double and then pinch-runner Alexis Jury would come in to score after Mia Ruffalo put down a sac bunt but reached via an error. After a pair of walks to load the bases, Ruffalo would come into score on a passed ball. York cut the deficit in half but stranded two runners making three straight outs and still trailed 4-2.

• The Spartans would add another, pulling within one, on a sac fly from Ruffalo to bring in Alyssa Harhigh who led the fifth inning off with a base on balls. The Spartans again left a runner stranded in scoring position but just trailed 4-3 after five innings.

• After a scoreless sixth and top half of the seventh, York would begin the bottom of the seventh with a lead-off single from Harhigh. She would later steal second but get stranded there and the Spartans would have their five-game winning streak snapped with a 4-3 loss.

  

SPARTAN NOTES:

York is now 21-10 all-time in Clermont, Fla. … the Spartans had their four-game streak with a homerun snapped in their game-one win … in their game-two loss, the Spartans stranded a season high ten runners on base, their previous high was seven … York now has three players with double-digit hits with freshman Taylor Lindsay leading the way with 12 … sophomore Shyla Pastore and freshman Alyssa Harhigh each have ten hits apiece … Harhigh also leads the team with 10 runs after scoring a pair today, she also added her team-leading 13th RBI … the Spartan offense is hitting .306 on the season while their pitching is holding opponents to just a .211 average.

The Spartans are back in action tomorrow morning when they take on Houghton College at 9:00 am. York will then battle Concordia-Moorhead in game two with first pitch slated for 11:15 am.
