Eastern Edges York Twice in Friday Double Dip

ST. DAVIDS, PA – The York College softball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader to Eastern University on a breezy Friday afternoon in St. David's, PA. The Eagles won game one 4-3 and then captured the nightcap 5-3. York falls to 21-19 with the two losses while the Eagles improve to 13-17 with the two wins.

In game one, the Eagles jumped on York early with a three-run bottom of the first inning. All three runs came courtesy of a Emily Houck three-run homer as the hosts assumed control of the game immediately.

York finally got on the board in the top of the sixth inning as Katie Maloney (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) walked and came home on a two-run shot to centerfield by newly minted All-CAC outfielder Jayci Cristaudo (Mechanicsville, Md./Chopticon).

The Spartans then tied the game in the top of the seventh as Miranda Shandy (Bowie, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) jacked a solo shot to left. The Spartans got two more runners on base with a pair of walks but York wouldn't be able to push home the go ahead run.

The Eagles won the opener in the bottom of the seventh as Deanna Laughman doubled to left to lead off the inning. After a sacrifice bunt moved her to third, Laughman scored on an RBI fielder's choice from Ashton Tomlinson to end the game.

Alyssa Welsh earned the win for the Eagles as she allowed three runs on six hits in her seven innings of work. She walked three and struck out one in her complete game effort. Melissa Jurkiewicz (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson Township) suffered the loss as she allowed four runs on seven hits in her 6.1 innings of work. She struck out a career-high eight while she did not walk a batter. She falls to 5-6 with the loss.

Houck finished the game 1-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored. Erica Pyla-Gibson and Tomlinson each had two hits and a run scored for Eastern while Tomlinson also had an RBI.

Cristaudo led York as she was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Shandy added two hits, an RBI and a run scored on her second home run of the year.

In the nightcap, York opened the scoring with a two runs in the top of the second. Carleigh Ruleman (Owings, Md./Northwest) led off the inning with a single to center. She moved to second and scored when Emily Glatts (Brookhaven, Pa./Padua Academy) singled to right and the rightfielder committed an error. Glatts ended up at third with no one out in the inning. Glatts would score when Megan Martin (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) singled to right.

The Spartan lead grew to 3-0 in the third when Maloney singled, advanced on a ground out and scored on a Vanessa Mendez (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) single. The inning could have been so much bigger as York loaded the bases only to let Eastern off the hook with a pair of strikeouts to end the frame.

The Eagles cut into the lead in the third as Laughman tripled to lead off the inning before scoring on an RBI ground out from Kasey Williams. Eastern tied the game in the fourth with two runs on four hits.

The Eagles went ahead for good in the fifth as Keri Hupp homered to center with two outs in the frame. Eastern tacked on an insurance run in the sixth courtesy of a Pyla-Gibs' RBI double to center.

York got a two out single from Mendez but couldn't rally as they suffered their fourth straight loss.

Kristen Walters earned the win in relief for the Eagles as she tossed three shutout innings. Walters allowed two hits in her three innings of work as she improves to 4-5. Haleigh Williams started and allowed three runs, one earned, on six hits in four innings of work. Williams struck out two and walked one in her outing.

Courtney Martin (Willow Street, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) suffered the loss as she allowed five runs on eight hits in her six innings of action. She struck out two and walked one as she falls to 16-13.

Pyla-Gibson was 2-for-2 with two RBI for the Eagles while Hupp was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Tomlinson added a hit and an RBI.

Ruleman led the game two offense as she was 3-for-4 with a run scored. Mendez was 2-for-4 with an RBI while Megan Martin was 1-for-2 with an RBI.
