Eagles Sweep Spartans in Conference Twinbill

YORK, PA – The York College softball team dropped a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader as the Mary Washington Eagles downed the Spartans 5-3 in the opener and 5-1 in the nightcap.

The Eagles improve to 17-11 overall and 6-0 in the CAC while the Spartans fall to 7-15 overall and 4-4 in the CAC.

In the opener, the Eagles jumped out a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. The Eagles banged out three hits in the inning but senior hurler Brittany Therres minimized the damage as she stranded two Eagles on base.

York got all their runs in the third as senior Brittany Schlorff drilled a three-run double to deep left, clearing the bases and giving York a 3-1 lead.

The Eagles tallied a three-run inning of their own in the top of the sixth. The inning was fueled by a trio of Spartan errors as the Eagles were more than willing to accept the Spartan generosity. The Eagles added a key insurance run in the top of the seventh as they led 5-3 heading to the bottom of the frame.

The Spartans got something going in the seventh as Alyssa Molino opened the inning with a single to right center. After a flyout and a pop out, Therres pounded a double down the left field line, advancing Molino to third and putting the tying run in scoring position. Eagle starter Annie Blaine coaxed Cory Urkuski into a fly out to center, ending the Spartan threat and the game.

Blaine earned the win as she went the distance, allowing three runs on 12 hits with five strikeouts and one walk. She improves to 7-6 with the win. Therres had a no decision as she allowed four runs, two earned, on 10 hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Urkuski came into the game in relief of Therres in the sixth and did not record an out as she allowed a run on two hits as she took the loss, her third setback of the year.

Morgan Lamon paced the Eagles as she was 4-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Brandee Adams and Hannah Williams each contributed two hits to the UMW offense.

Schlorff led the Spartans with her three-run double while she also walked once. Cara Rubinaccio banged out three hits in the loss while Erin O'Leary and Rachel Klein each added a pair of knocks for York.

In the nightcap, York got on the board first, scoring a run on an Ashley Chenoweth RBI single in the bottom of the second. The Spartans had runners on first and second with just one out but would be unable to plate any additional runs as they had to settle for the early 1-0 lead.

The Eagles wasted little time in answering York as they tallied three runs in the top of the third. Again, the Spartan defense was in a generous mood, giving the Eagles all three runs on no hits with two errors and two walks.

The Eagles added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to provide for the final four run margin.

Hannah Otterman earned the win as she allowed just one run on seven hits with five strikeouts and one walk. She improves to 7-3 with the victory.

Therres suffered the loss as the senior allowed four runs, just one earned, on 10 hits with a walk and a strikeout. Freshman Sara Thacker pitched to one batter and allowed the run to score without getting an out during her appearance in the third inning.

Otterman helped her own cause as she was 3-for-4 to pace the Eagle offense. Adams added two hits while Brianna D'Agata and Alecia Boykin each had an RBI for UMW.

Seven different Spartans had hits in the game with Jena Ruby's second inning double being York's lone extra base hit.

The Spartans return home to face PSU-Altoona in a non-conference doubleheader on Monday afternoon. Game one is scheduled for a 3:00 pm first pitch.
