Emory & Henry Downs Spartan Softball to Open 2012 Season

FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The York College softball squad opened their 2012 season with an 11-5 setback to Emory & Henry in the opening round of the Methodist University Early Bird Tournament in Fayetteville, NC on Friday. The Spartans' scheduled game against Methodist University was unable to be completed on Friday and will now take place as part of a triple-header on Saturday.

The Spartans' year got off to a rough start as the Wasps struck for three runs in the bottom of the first inning, knocking York ace Brittany Therres from the game after just 0.2 innings of work.

Emory & Henry tacked on three more runs off freshman Sara Thacker in the bottom of the second as the Spartans were staring at a 6-0 deficit.

The Green and White finally got on the board in the top of the third. Junior Hannah Hugel opened the frame with a single to third. Freshman Cara Rubinaccio followed with a bunt single to put Spartans at first and second with no outs. Senior Brittany Schlorff drilled a single to left center, scoring Hugel and pushing Rubianccio to third. After a strike out, freshman Carly Farr scored Rubinaccio with an RBI fielder's choice. Farr was safe on the play and went on to steal second, putting runners at second and third with one out. Schlorff came around to score on a Wasp error as the Spartans cut their deficit to 6-3.

The inning continued as Erin O'Leary singled to short, plating Farr with York's fourth run. Junior Cory Urkuski singled to left, scoring Sarah Harris as the Spartans trailed just 6-5 at the end of the inning.

Unfortunately for York, the Wasps weren't done scoring, denting the plate once in the third and twice more in the fourth and fifth innings as the Spartans fall to 0-1.

Jennifer True earned the win to improve to 1-1. She tossed seven innings, allowing five runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Therres took the loss as she allowed three runs on five hits with one walk in her two-thirds of an inning stint. Thacker struggled with her control as she walked five in her 3.1 innings of action. She allowed six runs on seven hits with a pair of strikeouts. Urkuski finished the game with two innings pitched as she allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits with two walks and one strikeout during her stint.

The Wasps were led by True as she was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI. Bethany Anderson was 2-for-4 with four RBI. Jenae Morrissey and Sylvia Robbins each had two hits and a run scored.

Schlorff led the Spartans as she was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. The Spartans had nine different players record a hit but all nine hits were singles.

York returns to action on Saturday as the weather has forced them into three contests for the day. The action kicks off with the conclusion to the Methodist game at 10:00 am followed by a 2:30 game against Roanoke followed by a contest against NC Wesleyan.
