Smith Concludes Stay at 2018 NCAA Division III Championships

LA CROSSE, WISC – York College senior Alex Smith concluded his Spartan career on Saturday in the finals of the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2018 NCAA Division III National Championships in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

Smith, who was making his second straight NCAA championships appearance, finished 11th of 14 finals participants on Saturday. Smith clocked in with a time of 9:30.72. He was seven seconds out of a top ten finish and just over 14 seconds out of a podium finish.

Central College's Mark Fairley won the individual national championship with a time of 9:04.50. Polo Buquete, the top seed coming into the championships, finished second with a time of 9:08.37. Haverford's Graham Peet finished third while Plymouth State's Sam Brunnette was fourth and Connecticut College's Scott Mason rounded out the top five in the event.

Smith finishes his standout career as a two-time Capital Athletic Conference outdoor champion in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. He was also a two-time All-CAC honoree in cross country in addition to being a two-time All-Mid Atlantic regional selection.
