YORK, PA – The York College men's tennis team suffered their third straight loss as the Spartans dropped a tight 5-4 decision to St. Mary's College in Capital Athletic Conference action on Sunday in York.
The Spartans fall to 7-7 overall and 1-4 in the CAC while the Seahawks improve to 5-10 overall and 3-3 in the league.
The Seahawks captured two of the three doubles points to take the 2-1 lead into singles play. The Seahawks won the first and third doubles matches but the Spartan duo of Ben Sentz and Lukas Olson managed to prevent the Seahawks from sweeping the three doubles points. Sentz and Olson earned an 8-6 win in their match to get York on the board.
Senior Sam Innerst kicked off singles play with a 6-3, 6-0 second singles win to tie the match at two. Jon Gorel put St. Mary's back on top with a 6-3, 6-3 first singles win over Sentz. Joel Hess drew the Spartans even at three points each as he earned a 6-1, 6-2 third singles win. Jack Brandenburg put St. Mary's back on top in the see-saw match as he recorded a 6-1, 6-4 fifth singles win. Tyler Richard tied the match at four points each as he outlasted Jacob Bartholow 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 in the sixth singles match. St. Mary's Samuel Sheats clinched the team win for the Seahawks with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 fourth singles win.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday as they step out of conference play to host Ursinus. The match is slated for a 4:00 pm start at the Spartan Tennis Centre.
