YORK, PA. – The Spartan men's golf team received good news Tuesday morning as they Division III PING All-Mid-Atlantic Region Teams were named and senior Tyler Newton and freshman Casey Leebrick earned all-region honors as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America. Newton also earned a spot on the Division III Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar team.
Newton and Leebrick both had outstanding 2019 campaigns as the posted nearly identical season averages in scoring with Newton shooting a 74.29 average per round and Leebrick at 74.38 with each competing in 21 rounds this season. Newton and Leebrick were just two of 98 golfers in the country to earn All-Region honors. Newton picked up one individual victory this year with Leebrick winning two tournaments including the Capital Athletic Conference Championship en route to being named the CAC Player and Rookie of the Year. This is Newton's second straight season earning All-Region honors after earning the accolade last year as a junior.
Newton and Leebrick posted the best and second-best scoring averages for a season in Spartan golf history. Newton set the all-time mark last year with a 75.4 average before lowering that mark to 74.29.
Newton also earned All-America Scholar honors making him one of just 61 golfers across the country to earn this accolade. To be eligible, the student-athlete must be a junior or senior academically, participate in at least 50% of the team's tournaments or compete in the NCAA Championships, have competed in at least two years at the collegiate level, have a stroke average under 79, and a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2. Newton fulfilled all these requirements and earned a spot on the exclusive All-America Scholar team.
Newton and Leebrick are representing the Spartans at the NCAA Championships this week.
