Spartan Men Sit Second After Day One of CAC Championships

WILLIAMSBURG, VA – The York College men's golf squad sits second after day one of the 2019 Capital Athletic Conference championships at the Golden Horseshoe Gold Course in Williamsburg, Virginia.

The Spartans fired a first day score of 314 as they are three strokes back of tournament leader Mary Washington. The Spartans lead tournament host Christopher Newport by one stroke and fourth place Babson by two strokes in a tightly bunched top four. Southern Virginia rounds out the top five but the Knights are 23 strokes back of Babson.

Freshman Casey Leebrick is tied for first place as he fired a three-over-par 74. Leebrick fired a one-over 37 on the front followed by a two-over 37 on the back. Leebrick had two birdies, 12 pars, three bogeys and one double bogey. Leebrick is tied with Christopher Newport's David Rabil for first place among the tournament's 35 players.

Sophomores Joel Marshall and Matthew Chalupa are both tied for seventh as they carded eight-over-par 79's. Marshall shot a 40 on the front followed by a 39 on the back. He had 12 pars, four bogeys and two double bogeys. Chalupa shot 42 on the front and 37 on the back for his 79. Chalupa had one birdie, 11 pars, three bogeys and three double bogeys.

Senior Tyler Newton got off to a rocky start to the tournament as York's three-time All-CAC ace shot 37 on the front followed by a 45 on the back. Newton had two birdies, seven pars, eight and bogeys. Newton had an eight on the par three 12th hole to put a big dent in his score.

Sophomore Luke Fayocavitz was York's fifth player as he finished with an 83. He fired a 43 on the front and a 40 on the back as he is tied for 17th in the tournament.

The Spartans return to the course on Friday at 10:30 am for round two of the tournament.
