DATAW ISLAND, S.C. – The York College men's golf squad finished eighth of 15 teams at the three-round adidas Intercollegiate Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at the Dataw Island Club in Dataw Island, South Carolina.
The Spartans shot a three-day total of 912 as they were two strokes back of Kenyon and Ohio Wesleyan for sixth place. Oglethorpe won the tournament with a score of 883 as they edged Hampden-Sydney by three strokes. North Carolina Wesleyan finished third at 897 while RPI was fourth (905) followed by Texas Luthern (908) in fifth.
Freshman Casey Leebrick had a fantastic tournament as he finished tied for first and came in second in the three-man playoff. Leebrick began Monday's first round with a sizzling four-under-par 68. He followed that with a two-over-par 74 on Monday afternoon as he took a two-stroke lead to Tuesday. Leebrick shot another 74 on Tuesday as he finished in a three-way tie with Texas Lutheran's Colin Uecker and Millikin's Michael Barber. Uecker won medalist honors with a birdie on the first play-off hole. Leebrick finished second as he bested Barber on the seconds play-off hole. The second-place finish is his second top five finish and his third top ten in six events for the year.
Senior Tyler Newton had another strong tournament as he finished tied for 11th with a three-round total of 222. Newton shot an even par 72 on Monday morning. He followed that with a two-over-par 74 on Monday afternoon. He shot a four-over-par 76 on Tuesday. Newton finished one shot out of tenth and three strokes out of a four-way tie for sixth.
Sophomore Luke Fayocavitz was York's third finisher as he placed tied for 31st in the 103-player field. Fayocavitz shot matching 76's on Monday and then followed with a 78 on Tuesday as he finished with a score of 230. He was two strokes back of a top 25 finish.
Freshman Dylan Wyatt was York's fourth scorer for the Spartans. He finished tied for 68th with a total score of 244. Wyatt shot 80 in Monday's opening round followed by an 85 on Monday afternoon. Wyatt had his best round of the tournament on Tuesday with a seven-over-par 79.
Junior Zach Billings was York's fifth tournament participant as he finished 95th with a score of 259. Billings shot 86 in Monday's morning round followed by a 90 on Monday afternoon. He closed out the tournament with an 83 on Tuesday.
The Spartans return to action on April 7 when they travel to the Hershey Cup at the Hershey Country Club. The two-day tournament kicks off at 8:00 am on Sunday morning. The event is hosted by the University of Rochester.
