Hot Shooting Spartans Roll Past Gwynedd Mercy on Tuesday

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA – The York College men's basketball squad shot a blistering 59.3% from the field en route to handing Gwynedd Mercy their first loss of the year, 88-67, in non-conference action on Tuesday night at the Griffin Complex in Gwynedd Valley, PA.

In addition to scorching from the floor, York shot 50% from three and 83.3% from the free throw line.

How It Happened:

• The Spartans came out at seized an early lead only to have the Griffins use an 11-4 run to take a 15-13 lead with 12:44 left in the opening half. The Spartans responded with a 10-3 spurt to take a 23-18 advantage four minutes later.

• The Spartans' five-point advantage would be the largest lead over the final seven minutes of the half as the teams went back and forth. The Griffins took the lead on a Myles Bunyon jumper with 58 seconds left in the half. David Giuliani gave York the halftime lead as he hit a lay-up just before the buzzer to give York a 39-38 advantage. The first half featured six ties and ten lead changes in the back and forth stanza.

• The Griffins got a Semah Slewion three pointer to start the half as they took their final lead of the game at 41-39. York answered with an 11-0 run that turned the game in their favor. Sophomore Colin Rimel capped the run with a big three pointer as York led 50-41 with 13:57 left in the game.

• The Spartans continued to roll as Zach Novick pushed the York advantage to 14 with a three pointer with 8:57 remaining. The Spartan lead hit 20 with a Jared Wagner three pointer with 4:28 left in the game. York capped the win with three pointers from Darin Gordon and Joe Polczynski to pick up their fourth 20-point win of the year.

The Spartans improved to 3-0 all-time as they made their first trip to Gwynedd Valley to take on the Griffins … York's previous two wins in the series both came at Charles Wolf Gymnasium …  the Spartans shot a season-high 59.3% from the floor … it's the fourth time this year the Spartans have shot over 50% from the floor in a game … York tied a season-high with 14 three-pointers as they shot a season-high 50% from beyond the arc … York shot a season-best 83.3% (10-for-12) from the free throw line … York outrebounded the Griffins and York is now 4-0 when winning the battle on the glass … the Spartans set a new season-best with 23 assists on their 32 field goals … York committed a season-low 12 turnovers … York allowed the Griffins to shoot 47.8% from the field, the highest percentage from an opponent this year … York has allowed 67 points in back-to-back games … senior Jared Wagner netted a season-high 21 points while he set a new career-high with 12 assists … Wagner's 12 assists are fourth on the single-game list, tying him with Seth McLane had 12 helpers against Gallaudet February 5, 2003 … Chris Radecke (1991) and Craig Leake (1986) share the assists record with 15 … Wagner's four steals gives him 228 for his career as he is now 15 away from tying Jeff Landis for the Spartan school record of 243 … with his 12 assists, Wagner passed former Spartan great Brad Zerfing for third on the all-time assists list … Wagner now has 386 helpers, 37 short of tying Landis for second on the all-time list … Wagner's 21 points moves him into 24th place all-time as he passed Bob Klingseisen (1970-73) with 1,062 points … junior David Giuliani set a new career-high with 19 points while he also set a career-high with three assists … Giuliani went 9-for-14 from the floor with both of those totals being new career highs for the forward … freshman Logan Collins was perfect from the floor as he was 4-for-4 from the floor including 2-for-2 from three and 1-for-1 from the stripe.


Up Next

The Spartans return home for a Sunday afternoon contest as they will host Franklin & Marshall College at 3:00 pm. The game is a make-up from the season opener that was postponed due to a student protest at Mayser Center on November 8.
