Spartan Head to Virginia to Open NCAA Tournament Friday

YORK, PA – The York College men's basketball team earned an at-large bid to the 2019 NCAA Division III Tournament. The Spartans travel to Ashland, Virginia to face DeSales University in the tournament's opening round on Friday, March 1. The winner of that game will face the winner of the Randolph-Macon/Morrisville State first round game in Saturday's second round game.

The Spartans are making their sixth NCAA Tournament appearance in school history and second straight appearance after earning a bid last winter. The Spartans are making back-to-back tournament appearances for the first time since the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons when the Spartans earned back-to-back berths.

Spartans in the NCAA Tournament

The Spartans are making their sixth NCAA Tournament appearance in school history … the appearance is the second time York has gone to the tournament in back-to-back seasons as the Spartans earned the Capital Athletic Conference automatic bid after winning the CAC title last year … York also made back-to-back appearances in 2004-05 and 2005-06 … York's other two NCAA Tournament appearnaces came in 1994-95 and 2011-12 … the Spartans are 5-6 all-time in the NCAA Tournament … York's best run in the tournament came in 2004-05 when the Spartans advanced to the NCAA Final Four … York is 2-3 in first-round games while they have played three second round games … York got a first round bye in 2004-05 … York and DeSales are meeting for the first time in the NCAA Tournament … York has played 11 different teams in their NCAA Tournament history.

 

DeSales in the NCAA Tournament

The Bulldogs are making their fifth NCAA Tournament appearance and first since 2014 … DeSales is 6-4 all-time in the tournament … the last time the Bulldogs were in the tournament, they upset host Randolph-Macon 76-70 in the opening round before falling to the University of Mary Washington 77-49 in the second round … the Bulldogs advanced to the Elite Eight in 2009 and then followed that with a Sweet 16 in 2010.

 

The Last Time We Met

The last time DeSales and York squared off was November 18, 2005 when York downed the Bulldogs 74-60 in the opening round of the Dickinson College Pizza Hut Tip-Off Tournament in Carlisle, PA … the Spartans were led by Chad McGowan's 26 points while Kenny Fass chipped in 12 points … York converted 9-of-16 from three in the win … York is 12-6 all-time against the Bulldogs as the Spartans have won two straight in the series … the two teams have met just four times since the start of the 1989-90 season.
