Spartans Head to CNU For CAC Championship Clash

YORK, PA – The York College men's basketball squad heads to Newport News, Virginia on Saturday to face the top-seeded Christopher Newport Captains in the 2019 Capital Athletic Conference championship game at the Freeman Center. The teams tied for the regular season championship and will face each other in the championship game for the second year in a row. The Spartans captured last year's title in Newport News, 82-73.

The Captains earned the first seed via a coin flip and have buzzed through the tournament with a 89-59 win over Southern Virginia in the quarterfinals followed by an 87-71 win over Salisbury in the semifinals.

York bounced St. Mary's 76-47 in their opening round game and followed that with a hard-fought 69-62 win over third-seeded Mary Washington on Thursday night.

Spartans and the Captains in the CAC Tournament

The Spartans and Captains have met just once in the CAC Tournament and it was last year in the championship game … the title for the Spartans last year was their third in six appearances … the Spartans are 3-0 in their last three CAC Championship game appearances having won the titles in 2004-05, 2011-12, and 2017-18 … the last two championship wins have come on the road at Mary Washington and at CNU … The Captains have two CAC titles, winning the championships in 2015-16 and 2016-17 … the Captains are making their sixth consecutive CAC Championship game appearances … CNU has been in the championship game each of their six years in the CAC … York is now 26-21 all-time in the CAC Tournament.

 

Spartan Notes

The Spartans have won a season-high ten straight games … the Spartans earned their 20th win of the season on Tuesday night … it's the second time in school history that the Spartans have won at least 20 games in back-to-back season (2004-05 and 2005-06) … York has reached 20 wins six times in 50 seasons of York College basketball … the Captains hold an all-time series lead of 11-4 but the Spartans have won three of the last five meetings heading into the title tilt … senior Jason Bady moved into 22nd place on the all-time scoring list as he now has 1,106 points … Bady is five points away from passing former Spartan great Jeff Landis for 21st on the all-time scoring list … Bady was named the CAC Player of the Year on Thursday as was the fourth Spatan in school history to earn the honor … teammate Jared Wagner earned his first All-CAC honor as he was named to the second team on Thursday as well … the two teams split their previous meetings with each team winning on their home court … the Captains earned a hard-fought 73-71 come from behind win in Newport News on January 2 while the Spartans posted a come-from-behind win of their own, downing the Captains 82-81 on January 26 in York on Jared Wagner's game-winning lay-up … York is 7-0 in the month of February … York is 8-4 on the road this year and 5-2 on the road in league play.

The winner of Saturday's championship game earns the CAC's NCAA Division III Tournament automatic bid while the loser will await their tournament fate. The NCAA Tournament field will be announced on Monday. The Captains enter the game ranked first in the region while York currently sits third.
