Spartans Drop 2019 Opener to #9 Rochester

GRANTHAM, PA – The York College field hockey squad opened their 2019 campaign with a 3-1 loss to #9 University of Rochester on a warm Friday afternoon in Grantham, PA. Messiah College served as the host for the two squads in their season opener.

The game was the first played under the new NCAA rules. The game is now only 60 minutes long and is broken into four 15 minute quarters instead of the two 35 minute halves.

How It Happened:

• The Spartans carried the play early as they fired off seven first quarter shots and earned four penalty corners. Rochester goalie Kate Kujawa kept the Spartans off the board with a pair of first period saves.

• Rochester turned the tables in the second quarter as they seized control of the play. The Yellow Jackets picked up the first score as Juney Lee converted a loose ball of a Kaitlyn Wallace save as Amanda Strenk and Catherine Hauser were credited with assists on the play with just 2:42 left before the half. Rochester outshot the Spartans 4-1 in the second quarter and held a 2-1 margin in penalty corners.

• The Yellow Jackets put a stranglehold on the game in the third quarter with a pair of goals. Hauser made it 2-0 just four minutes into the second half with a goal off a pass from Strenk. Maya Haigis made it 3-0 3:18 later as Strenk picked up her third assist of the contest. Rochester outshot York 7-0 in the quarter as they also held a 2-0 margin in corners.

• The Spartans spoiled the shutout with 7:40 left in the game as senior Amanda Boclair found the back of the cage off a pass from freshman Abby Piotrowski on a penalty corner. The Spartans would not get another shot in the game as they dropped the two-goal decision to the ranked Yellow Jackets.

Game Notes:

York is now 0-3 in their three openers under head coach Katie Fost however all three of those season openers have come against squads ranked in the top ten of the NFHCA Coaches Poll … the meeting with Rochester is the first in the 51-year history of the Spartan program … the goal for senior Amanda Boclair is her second career tally … the Spartans played nine freshmen in the game.

The Spartans return to action on Wednesday when they host Dickinson College in York's 2019 home opener. The match is slated for a 6:00 pm start at Kinsley Field.
