Zinn Notches First Spartan Win as York Rolls Past W&L, 5-2

YORK, PA - The York College field hockey squad put on a dominating performance on Saturday, defeating Washington & Lee 5-2 in non-conference action. It was the Spartans first win of the season moving them to 1-3 and the first win for new Spartan head coach Carly Zinn.  The loss drops W&L to 1-3 for the campaign.

After a couple slow starts early this season, the Green and White came out hot early in the first half. Senior Jillian Brezgel (Herndon, Pa./Line Mountain) got things going early for the Spartans as she snuck one in the back of the goal giving York the early 1-0 lead just 10:53 into the game.

The Spartans kept relentless pressure on the Generals goalie throughout the first half.  That pressure paid off when freshman Sydney LaMarsh (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) was able to get on the board for the Green and White as she collected a loose ball and fired it into the back of the goal.  The lead would remain at two goals for the rest of the first half.

Seven minutes into the second half, Washington & Lee's Iziar Moure took a shot off of a loose ball and found the box to put the Generals on the board.  The game wouldn't remain close much longer as junior Nancy Saylor (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) finished off an impressive drive with a goal, assisted by senior Kailey Brewer (Hartly, Del./Smyrna). The goal came less than four minutes after the W&L goal.

The Spartans wasted little time in padding the lead. Brewer was able to capitalize for York off of a great pass from Holly Martin to extend the lead 4-1 with just under 12 minutes left in regulation.  Taylor Zusi added another goal for Washington & Lee as she collected a rebound off of York's goalie and sent it in the box. Brewer finished off the game with an impressive goal for the Spartans. Brewer received a long outlet pass, drove it around two defenders, swerved the ball around the goalie, and tapped it in for the final goal of the game. The goal is Brewer's team-leading fifth of the year.

For the game, York held all the statistical advantages with a 29-8 bulge in total shots and an impressive 20-1 edge in penalty corners.

York's Abby Baker (Baltimore, Md./Mercy) records the win for her Spartan squad with two saves on only four shots on goal.  Washington & Lee's Megan Axelrod takes the loss having 11 saves on sixteen shots on goal.

The Spartans return to action on Thursday, September 12, against East. Mennonite.  The game is set to start at 4:30 and Kinsley Field.
