Spartan Offense Stifled by Sea Gulls in Doubleheader Sweep

SALISBURY, MD. – The York College baseball had their bats silenced by stellar Salisbury pitching as they suffered their first three-game sweep in conference play on the season dropping a pair on Saturday.

How It Happened

• After a 1-2-3 top of the first for York, Salisbury would get on the board early scoring on an RBI-single off the bat of Brad Haas. The 1-2-3 innings for the Spartans would become a theme as Salisbury pitcher Jimmy Adkins was perfect through 7.1 innings.

• The Gulls would get another run in the second inning when Cameron Hyder would lace a two-out single to center field that would give Salisbury a 2-0 advantage. Another two-out hit in the fourth inning, this time a double by Tyler Mayo would extend Salisbury's lead to 3-0.

• Justin Meekins would lead off the fifth frame with an opposite field homer followed up by a pair of hits including an RBI-single by Adkins to push the Sea Gull lead to 5-0.

• In the seventh, Salisbury would load the bases with a walk and a pair of bunt singles to set the table for the inning. Adkins would bring Meekins in on a sac fly followed by a Will Gutekunst single through the left side to bring in another and Salisbury led 7-0 with two innings to play.

• The Spartans would get on the board in the eighth when Luke Turner blasted a homer to left field to end the perfect game bid for Adkins and break the shutout. An error in the ninth by the Gulls would help York add another run by the Spartans fell 7-2 in game one.

How It Happened

• The Sea Gulls would again strike in the first inning scoring a pair of runs on just one hit. Brad Haas would single to left field to bring in the first run of the game and would later come around to score on a passed ball to put York in an early 2-0 hole.

• After four scoreless innings that saw just two hits combined, both by the Spartans, Salisbury would get on the scoreboard again in the sixth. Justin Meekins led off the frame with another opposite field home run pushing the lead out to 3-0. Will Gutekunst would later fly out to right field but a Spartan error would bring in Jack Barry and Salisbury led by four after six innings of play.

• Salisbury would add another run in the seventh taking advantage of a Spartan error followed by a pair of runs in the eighth. York would go down in order in the ninth inning and Xavier Marmol completed the complete game shutout and completed the three-game sweep over the Spartans.



The Spartans are now 45-80-1 all-time against the Sea Gulls … York has now lost six in a row to Salisbury in the series … the Spartans were shut out or the first time all season and were held to just seven hits in 18 innings on Saturday … the three hits in game two were the fewest in a game this season for the Green and White … York was outscored 30-10 in the series … York is now hitting .253 on the road as team this season … Luke Turner hit his second homer on the season in game one … with another steal in game two, Grant Oberholtzer is now tied for third in the CAC with 13 steals on the season … on the road, York is 5-6 this season.



The Spartans return home and are back in action tomorrow as they host the Rutgers-Camden Scarlet Raptors in a non-conference matchup. First pitch Sunday is set for 12:30 pm at Jaquet Field.
