Wesley: 8-15, 2-7 CAC

Game #1

Score: York 6, Wesley 7
Hits: York 13, Wesley 12
Errors: York 1, Wesley 0
Left on Base: York 14, Wesley 14

How it Happened

• York's first offensive threat came in the bottom of the second, when Christian Bilan launched a leadoff double off the right field fence. Then, with one out, Collin Crowell blasted one to the left field wall, scoring Bilan and giving the Spartans an early 1-0 lead. York eventually loaded the bases after a pair of walks with two outs, but Grant Oberholtzer grounded into a fielder's choice to end the inning.

• Wesley responded well in the top of the third inning with a leadoff single and then a two-run blast from Chris Seibert put the Wolverines up 2-1. William Foster then managed a single and eventually would steal both second and third as two other Wolverines reached base after being hit to load the bases for Wesley. Bobby Kuehn dug in on the mound, though, and earned a strikeout to bring up Jarrett Wallace with two outs. Wallace floated a single just over the outreached glove of Crowell, scoring a pair of runs. Kuehn battled back to force a ground out, but Wesley took a 4-1 lead to the bottom of the third.

Jack Barry led off the bottom half of the fourth with a bomb over the right field wall, cutting into the Wolverine lead, making it 4-2. Patrick Clement doubled to left center with two outs, and Bailey Doan was hit by a pitch to put two runners on, but Sam Meck worked out of the jam, ending the fourth at 4-2.

• In the top of the seventh, Tim Halasnik was in a bases loaded jam with just one out. He forced a hard-hit grounder to Crowell who flipped to Zach Hossler and then over to Bilan to complete the inning-ending 6-4-3 double play. Getting out of the inning without any damage was pivotal, holding the Wesley lead at 4-2. Immediately following, the Spartan bats came to life. With two outs, Seth Brosius singled up the middle, and then moved to second when Bilan worked a walk. Barry was next, and lined a shot off the middle of the right field wall, doubling and driving home Brosius. Wesley got out of the inning without any further damage, but York cut its deficit in half, ending the seventh inning down 4-3.

• Wesley added another run in the top of the eighth inning to double its lead before Zac Stoll entered the game for York on the mound. He entered with two outs, but runners on the corners. A wild pitch allowed one run to score, and a base hit brought another one home, giving Wesley a 7-3 advantage. In the bottom half of the eighth, York clawed back with three runs of its own. Hossler singled to score Doan and then Brosius singled through the left side scoring Hossler and Oberholtzer, making it 7-6 entering the ninth.

• With one out in the bottom half, Clement singled to get the tying run on the base paths, but Wesley worked out of the jam, sealing a 7-6 win.

How it Happened

• Each team knocked in a run in the first inning, and it was Seth Brosius doubling to left field that brought home Grant Oberholtzer to tie the game up at 1-1. Wesley managed another run in the top of the second, but York erupted in the bottom of the third to score four runs and explode out to a 5-2 lead. Zach Hossler doubled down the left field line to lead off the inning and he moved to third when Brosius lifted a sacrifice fly to right field. Christian Bilan was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corner, and Jack Barry came through with a single to right to score Hossler and move Bilan to third. Collin Crowell then singled to center, scoring Bilan. York wasn't done though as Rob Acierno doubled to center scoring Barry and putting Crowell on third. Crowell would come home for the fourth run of the inning when Patrick Clement put together and RBI ground out.

• Will Barton homered to left with two men on to quickly erase York's 5-2 lead in the top of the fourth, leveling the score at 5-5. Wesley pushed ahead in the fifth when Deshawn Aiken doubled to right, scoring one runner. But it was the Spartans who dug in and earned a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead back at 7-6. Clement singled with one out and then Bailey Doan doubled to put a pair of runners in scoring position. Next was Oberholtzer, who managed a single to right to score Clement, and with the bases loaded Brosius reached on a fielder's choice, which scored Doan.

• Chris Seibert singled in the top of the eighth to tie the game yet again, scoring Barton, sending it back to 7-7 in the bottom of the eighth. York worked it to load the bases in the bottom half, and Crowell was hit by a pitch, bringing home Hossler to take the lead. The Spartans couldn't manage any more runs despite having the bases loaded, but the damage was done. Brandon Haggerty calmly struck out the side in the ninth, and he earned the win, throwing 4.1 innings while allowing just two hits.
