Red Hawks Fly Past Spartans in Non-Conference Match Up

UPPER MONTCLAIR, N.J. – The York College baseball squad dropped an 11-1 decision to Montclair State University in a non-conference contest on Tuesday afternoon in New Jersey.

The Spartans fall to 23-8 overall while the Red Hawks improve to 16-14 for the campaign.

The Red Hawks jumped on Spartan starter Elliot Mortimer (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) for a pair of early runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Red Hawks loaded the bases with a pair of hits and a hit by pitch. Mortimer then walked Phillip Scott with the bases loaded to push in the game's first run. Nicholas Martins then lifted a sacrifice fly to score Montclair's second run.

York got on the board in the top of the second as Derek Pitzer (York, Pa./Dallastown) singled to open the inning. He moved to second when Colin Porter (Hanover, Pa./South Western) singled to left. After a strikeout, Scott Steffy (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) walked to load the bases. Montclair starter Nick Listro then balked to move each Spartan up one base as Pitzer scored from third.

The Red Hawks broke the game open in the bottom of the third as they plated four runs on four hits in the inning. That big inning gave the Red Hawks a 6-1 lead.

Montclair tacked on a run in the fourth and three more in the fifth to take a 10-1 advantage. The Red Hawks closed out the scoring with a run in the eighth.

Listro earned the win for Montclair as he went five innings, allowing a run on five hits with three walks and a strikeout. He improves to 1-1 with the win. The three Montclair relievers that followed him allowed just three hits with four strikeouts and a walk as the Red Hawk bullpen was outstanding.

Mortimer suffered his first collegiate loss as he falls to 5-1. He threw three innings, allowing six runs on six hits with two walks and a pair of strikeouts. The Spartan bullpen was not very good as three York relievers combined to allow five runs on eight hits with two walks and four strikeouts in five innings of action.

Ryan Long and Juan Perdomo led the Red Hawks with three hits each. Long was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI while Perdomo was 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Jayson Stolz added a hit and two RBI while Connor Abreu contributed a hit and two runs scored.

Porter banged out three hits to pace the York offense. Pitzer was the only other Spartan with multiple hits as he was 2-for-4 with a run scored. York finished the game with eight hits. Steffy had York's lone extra base hit with his leadoff double in the seventh.

The Spartans have lost three of their last four games as they have played six games in the last seven days. York will now have off until Saturday when they host Southern Virginia in a non-conference doubleheader. The Spartans and Knights start game one at 1:00 pm on Saturday.
