Spartans Down Elizabethtown on a Sunny Monday

YORK, PA – The York College baseball squad posted an 8-4 non-conference win over Elizabethtown College on a sun-splashed Monday afternoon at Jaquet Field in York. The Spartans, winners of three of their last four, improve to 9-15 overall while the Blue Jays fall to 10-10 for the season.

After a scoreless first inning, the Spartans jumped on the board in the bottom of the second. Senior CT Stanley started the inning with a double to right center. He advanced to third on a ground out and then scored when senior Rob Klinck hit a towering double off the left field wall just inside the foul pole. Klinck scored when sophomore Jimmy King flicked an opposite field single to left as the Spartans seized the early advantage.

York increased the lead in the third as junior Steve Tretter launched his second home run of the year, hitting a laser beam out to right centerfield as the Spartan lead grew to 3-0. Senior Kyle Cook followed that with a beautiful bunt single down the third base line to ignite a secondary Spartan uprising.  Sophomore Justin Cohen hit a double inside the first base bag and down the line to move Cook to third. Senior Devin Harbold walked to load the bases. Stanley then looked like he cleared the bases when he ripped a shot down the left field line that just curved foul, negating the possible grand slam. Instead, Stanley plated Cook with a sacrifice fly. Klinck then singled up the middle to score Cohen as the Spartan lead grew to 5-0.

The Blue Jays reached freshman starter David Walker for a run in the top of the fourth. Walker walked Matt Reade to lead off the inning and Reade eventually came around to score on a Brian Verdelli RBI single to left. Walker stranded a pair of runners in the inning as he minimized the Blue Jay damage.

Elizabethtown added another tally against Walker in the top of the fifth but York responded with two in the bottom of the fifth. Senior Joe Doyle had an RBI single while King also had a run scoring hit in the frame.

Both teams scored single runs in the eighth and Elizabethtown scored a single run in the top of the ninth to provide for the final four run margin.

Walker earned the win as he improves to 1-1. The freshman threw five innings, allowing two runs on five hits with four walks and a pair of strikeouts.

Joey Seremula suffered the loss as he allowed seven runs on 11 hits with two walks and a strikeout in his five innings of work. He falls to 1-4 with the setback.

Stanley paced the 14-hith Spartan attack as he was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI. Klinck was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored while Doyle also had two hits with an RBI and a run scored. Cook and King were the other Spartans with multiple hits as Cook was 2-for-4 with a run scored while King was 2-for-5 with two RBI.

Verdelli led the Blue Jays as he was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Andrew Gordon was 1-for-3 with a run scored and RBI while Mark Minisce was 1-for-1 with an RBI.

The Spartans step back into conference play on Tuesday as they host Wesley College in a Capital Athletic Conference make up contest. Game time at Jaquet Field is set for 3:30 pm.
