SHIPPENSBURG, PA – The York College women's cross country squad kicked off their 2017 season with their traditional season-opening trip to the Piper XC Challenge hosted by Shippensburg University on Friday night.
The Spartans had a solid showing under the lights as they placed sixth out of nine teams at the event.
Top Spartan Performers
• Juniors Jess DelViscio and Alayna De Bruin paced the Spartans as they were able to pace and push each other throughout the race. DelViscio placed 29th with a time of 16:06 over the 4K distance. De Bruin finished six spots back in 35th wit ha time of 16:15.
• Junior Kristi Wandzilak was York's next finisher as she placed 53rd with a time of 16:55. Freshman Emma Rogers was right on her tail as she finished 54th with a time of 16:55 in her first collegiate race. Freshman Nicole Wasserleben rounded out the Spartans' second pack as she finished 56th with a time of 16:58 in her collegiate debut.
• Sophomore Rachel Banchiere and senior Oriana Howell rounded out the Spartans' top seven finishers. Banchiere placed 69th with a time of 17:41. Howell placed 77th as she crossed the line in a time of 18:05.
He Said It
"The women had some great performances by the underclassmen and the upperclassmen alike," said head coach Stephen LoBianco. "Jess and Alayna both ran well and were able to finish closely to each other while working together. Kristi, Emma, and Nicole all ran a great race and were able to really move up the second part of the race. As a whole, it was really good to see the women moving up throughout the race. We will look for that to be a theme through the next part of the season."
The Spartans return to action on Saturday, September 16 when they travel the D2/D3 Invitational hosted by Kutztown University. The action is slated for a 10:00 am start.
