Piper Challenge See Spartans Take Fifth

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – In a unique evening-hours environment Friday, the York College women's cross country team competed at the Galen E. Piper Alumni Open / Cross Country Challenge at Shippensburg University. In the 4,000-meter event, the Spartans took fifth out of eight squads.

"Overall a great showing for the York College ladies finishing fifth out of eight as a team," Spartan mentor Stephen LoBianco said. "The course was under the lights, which means the cool weather and small race atmosphere made it perfect for our women to get some solid competition on the 1k loop."

As she had done in York's first event of the season, Jess Miller (Dauphin, Pa. / Bishop McDevitt) led the pace for the Green and White, crossing the finish line at 15:47. A personal-best in the 4k distance, the junior collected 21st place overall out of 84 total runners.

Jenna Roberts (Stewartstown, Pa. / Kennard-Dale), who LoBianco noted "had a strong last two laps," traversed the course in 16:20 to take 34th

Competing in her first full event of the year, Caroline DeLany (Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora) finished in 16:56.

Kasey Fogelsanger (Owings Mills, Md. / Mercy), Stephanie Bower (Bel Air, Md. / C. Milton Wright), Emily Abell (Timonium, Md. / Dulaney), and Alicia Dillman (Leola, Pa. / Conestoga Valley) finished the race together for 56th, 57th, 58th, and 59th, respectively.

"Almost every (Spartan runner) PR'd on the course and ran a smart, controlled race passing people the entire time," LoBianco said. "The top seven were within 1:17 of each other."

Up next for the Green and White, the Spartans host the Coach Achtzehn Classic on Saturday, September 14. Start time at John Rudy Park is slated for 11:00 am.
