WESTMINSTER, MD – The York College women’s cross country team opened their 2009 campaign Saturday morning at McDaniel College’s Green Terror Challenge. The race consisted of two events, a 3k and a 5k, with McDaniel and the Spartans finishing 1-2 in both events.
In the 3k portion of the Challenge, the Green and White took four top-tens, competing only against host McDaniel in the 25-participant event. The Spartans’ top performance came from All-Capital Athletic Conference runner Melody Parshall (Dover, Pa./Homeschooled). The senior completed the 3,000-meter course in 13:07, taking sixth place. Sophomore Corie Thompson (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham), the reigning conference Rookie-of-the-Year, placed seventh (13:08) while freshman Tuesday Wilson (York, Pa./Eastern York) nabbed eighth (13:09). York’s final top-ten mark came from junior Claudia Hess (Reinholds, Pa./Cocalico) who clocked in at 13:33 to secure tenth place.
The Green and White finished the 3k event with a total team time of 52:57.00, averaging 13:14.25 over the course.
For the 5k event, the Spartans faired well once again, notching second place out of seven teams, including CAC foes St. Mary’s, Hood, and Stevenson. Parshall recorded the top time for the Spartans with a 22:00 fifth-place performance. Thompson and Wilson finished seventh and eighth in the 5k, clocking 22:09 and 22:14 times, respectively. Newcomer Chelsea McCracken (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern) garnered York’s fourth top-twenty finish, crossing the line in 16th at 23:37.
The Spartans completed the 5,000-meter course in a total team time of 1:30:00.00, while posting an average of 22:30.00.
Next Saturday, the Green and White host the first of two York Invitationals this year. Race time is set for 10:30 am at John Rudy Park.
