Great Spartan Efforts Fall Short in Saturday Tri-Match

YORK, PA – The York College volleyball team dropped a pair of matches on Saturday afternoon in a tri-match in York. The Spartans lost a tough 3-1 decision to Capital Athletic Conference front-runner Marymount University in the opener and then fell to Muhlenberg 3-1 in the nightcap.

In the opening set against Marymount, the teams went back and forth with neither squad being able to get a lead any bigger than three points. There were seven ties in the set with the final tie coming at 17-all. The Spartans scored the next three points before the Saints called timeout. Marymount scored the next two points but York responded by recording five of the next seven points of the match to take the four-point set one win.

In set two, the Spartans got off to a great start as they led 13-7 for their biggest advantage of the set. The Saints went on a 7-3 spurt, trimming York's lead to two at 16-14. York responded by pushing the lead back to five only to see the Saint draw to within one at 19-18.

The Green and White maintained the lead and built it to three on a Katie Huston (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) kill as the Spartans looked poised to take a 2-0 lead. The Saints came storming back as they blitzed the Spartans with five straight points to steal the game win and tie the match at one.

The set two loss visibly deflated the Spartans as they Saints used a steady attack to slowly build a lead to 16-10. The Green and White trimmed the lead to 17-13 but that would be as close as they would get the rest of the way as Marymount cruised to a 25-17 set three win.

The fourth set saw the Spartans jump out to a quick 6-1 lead only to see the Saints tie the set at 10. Marymount pushed out to a five-point lead and continued to pull away from the Spartans. The Spartans trailed 22-16 when York head coach Sue DuMars used a timeout. That timeout spurred the Spartans to a six point run, tying the set at 22. The Saints responded by notching the next two points before the Spartans made it 24-23. Marymount won the match on a Spartan attack error, ending the valiant Spartan comeback attempt.
