Spartans Fall in Three at St. Mary's

ST. MARY'S CITY, MD – The Spartans dropped a hard-fought 3-0 Capital Athletic Conference decision at St. Mary's on Tuesday night.

The Spartans fell 25-19, 27-25, and 25-15. York is now 9-16 overall and 2-2 in the CAC while the Seahawks improve to 12-6 overall and 3-1 in the league.

The first set changed on a 7-0 run by the Seahawks. That run turned a 15-13 Spartan lead into a 20-15 St. Mary's advantage. The Spartans climbed back to 21-18 but the hosts scored four of the final five points of the set to close out the game one win.

The second set was a battle as neither team could get out to any significant traction. Neither team led by more than four in the set as there were 13 ties during the game. The Seahawks earned the win on an attack error by the Spartans followed by a Mimi Graf kill.

York never recovered from losing the third set as the hosts raced out to a 10-4 advantage. The Seahawks pushed their lead to as many as 10 (18-8) as they would maintain that lead and earn the three-set win.

Mandy Goodspeed led the Seahawks with nine kills and five block assists in the victory. Carissa Hill led the defensive charge with 15 digs while Graf added six kills, 11 digs, and 11 assists. Grace Chao contributed 15 assists and three service aces. Brigid Morris chipped in with seven kills and two block assists.

The Spartans were led by senior Jackie Schwarm (Lantham, Md./Homeschooled) as she banged out nine kills with one block assist. Schwarm hit a team-high .333 for the match. Senior Katie Huston (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) added five kills, three digs, a block assist, and an assist.

Senior Kristin Martinak (Hanover, Pa./South Western) dished out a match-high 23 assists for the Green and White. Martinak added nine digs, four kills, a block assist and a service ace to the Spartan attack. Alison Dorsey (Elkridge, Md./Long Branch) contributed five kills and four block assists. Katherine Graziano (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) led the Spartan defense with 15 digs.

The Green and White committed nine service errors in the loss while they hit .125 as a squad. St. Mary's hit .188 as a team and had seven service aces and seven errors.

The Spartans return to action on Saturday afternoon when they host Marymount and Muhlenberg in a tri-match. The Spartans and Saints kick off the action at 1:00 pm followed by the Mules and Saints facing off at 3:00 pm. York and Muhlenberg then close out the day with a non-conference match at 5:00 pm.
