WASHINGTON, D.C. – The York College Spartans dropped a five set non-conference decision at Catholic University on Wednesday night in Washington, D.C.
The Cardinals won the match 22-25, 25-21, 17-25, 25-18, and 15-9. The Spartans fall to 7-13 overall while the Cardinals improve to 18-3.
The Spartans were paced by junior Charlotte Sabatano (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) as she banged out a career-high 21 kills while she also had a career-high 23 digs. Sabatano hit .204 in the loss. Senior Katie Huston (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) contributed eight kills, 12 digs, two service aces, and two assists.
Junior libero Katherine Graziano (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) also established a new career high as she recorded 42 digs in the match. The 42 digs are just one short of tying former All-CAC libero Ashley Rineman's school record of 43 digs set on September 12, 2012 against Rochester.
Senior setter Kristin Martinak (Hanover, Pa./South Western) handed out 40 assists while she also had 13 digs, six service aces, one kill and a solo block.
Freshman Kayla Gibbs (York, Pa./York Suburban) chipped in with 14 digs, seven kills, and a career-high five service aces.
The Spartans banged out a season-high 16 service aces in the setback. York established a new school record for single match team digs as the Spartans finished with 114 as a team.
York returns to action on Saturday when they host a tri-match with Mary Washington and PSU Altoona. The Spartans face the Eagles in a Capital Athletic Conference match at 1:00 pm. Mary Washington and Altoona square off in a 3:00 pm match followed by the Lions facing the Spartans in the 5:00 pm match at Charles Wolf Gymnasium.
