Volleyball Drops a Pair at Elizabethtown Blue Jay Invitational

ELIZABETHTOWN, PA – The York College volleyball squad dropped a pair of matches during day one of the Elizabethtown Blue Jay Classic on Friday in Elizabethtown, PA.

The Spartans opened the tournament with a 3-1 loss to Johns Hopkins and then dropped a 3-1 decision to SUNY New Paltz. The scores against JHU were 25-17, 18-25, 25-15, and 25-13. In the setback against New Paltz, the Spartans lost 20-25, 25-16, 29-27, and 25-21.

The Spartans are now 4-8 overall as they have dropped four straight.

Against the Blue Jays, freshman Kayla Gibbs (York, Pa./York Suburban) had a career night as the outside hitter banged out 11 kills. Gibbs added six digs and was perfect in her 11 service attempts. Setter Kristin Martinak (Hanover, Pa./South Western) added five kills, seven assists, five digs and two solo blocks. Middle hitter Alison Dorsey (Ellicott City, Md./Long Reach) also had five kills for the Spartan offense.

Sarah Wukitch (East Greenville, Pa./Southern Lehigh) handed out 20 assists with nine digs. Wukitch added a service ace in 19 attempts with no errors. Junior Katherine Graziano (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) led the Spartan defense with 16 digs. 

Against the Hawks, junior Charlotte Sabatano (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) led the Spartan offense with 11 kills. Gibbs added eight kills and 10 digs. Martinak dished out 20 assists while she also had three kills, nine digs, a solo block and a block assist. Wukitch contributed 12 assists while she also had seven digs, and two service aces.

Katie Huston (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) chipped in with nine kills and a .364 attack percentage. Karli Hawxhurst (Prince Frederick, Md./Calvert) added nine digs while she was perfect in her 12 service attempts.

The Spartans return to action on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm when they face Lebanon Valley in York's third match of the tournament. They conclude their stay in Elizabethtown with a 3:00 pm match against Swarthmore.
