BETHLEHEM, PA – The York College volleyball squad finished third at the nine-time 12th Annual Greyhound Premiere Invitational hosted by Moravian College on Saturday in Bethlehem, PA.
The Spartans advanced to the championship bracket on Friday but dropped both of their matches Saturday for the third place finish. The Spartans fell to Capital Athletic Conference foe Marymount 3-1 (22-25, 25-13, 25-14, 25-17) and then lost to host Moravian 3-0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-16). The Spartans are now 2-2 for the year while Marymount is 4-0 and Moravian is 3-1.
In the loss to the Saints, senior Katie Huston (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) played well with 13 kills, eight digs and a service ace. Junior Charlotte Sabatano (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) added nine kills and 13 digs for her second double-double of the year. Senior setter Kristin Martinak (Hanover, Pa./South Western) handed out 30 assists with 12 digs, one service ace, and one solo block. Junior libero Katherine Graziano (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) paced the Spartan defense with 26 digs in the loss.
Against Moravian, the Spartans scuffled offensively as they hit just .045 with 16 kills and 12 errors in 88 attempts. Huston had five kills while Sabatano added three. Huston also had seven digs and two aces during the match. Sophomore Sarah Wukitch (East Greenville, Pa./Southern Lehigh) played two sets at setter for York and had 10 assist and team high 11 digs. Graziano added nine digs to the Spartan defense.
Sabatano was rewarded for an outstanding weekend of play as she earned All-Tournament team honors for the Green and White.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday evening when they travel to F&M to face the Diplomats in a non-conference contest. The match is slated for a 7:00 pm start in Lancaster.
