Volleyball Begins 2014 with a Pair of Wins

BETHLEHEM, PA – The York College volleyball squad opened their 2014 season with a pair of wins on Friday during the opening rounds of the 12th Annual Greyhound Premiere Invitational hosted by Moravian College.

The Spartans defeated Centenary College 25-10, 25-13, and 25-6. York then beat Emmanuel 25-20, 25-22, and 25-22.

York advances to Saturday's championship bracket courtesy of the two wins.

In the win over Centenary, junior Charlotte Sabatano (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) powered the offense with nine kills and a .533 attack percentage in 15 attempts. Middle hitter Phoebe Schmehl (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) also played well with eight kills and a .500 attack percentage in 14 attempts while she also had a solo block. Senior Jackie Schwarm (Lanham, Md./Homeschooled) contributed seven kills and eight digs.

Senior setter Kristin Martinak (Hanover, Pa./South Western) dished out 20 assists, had three service aces, and a trio of digs for the Green and White. Libero Katherine Graziano (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) led the Spartans' defensive effort with 12 digs.

In the win over Emmanuel, Sabatano was again outstanding as she banged out 13 kills and added 12 digs for the double-double. Sabatano hit .312 in the win. Senior Katie Huston (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) added 12 kills and ten digs for a double-double of her own. Schwarm was the third Spartan in double figures in kills as she had 11 kills and a .286 attack percentage.

Martinak recorded 42 assists and eight digs while Graziano again led the Spartan defense with 20 digs.

Spartan head coach Sue DuMars was happy with the play of her squad.

"I thought we played well for the first time out," said DuMars. "We had a number of strong performances and I am looking forward to seeing how we play tomorrow."

The Spartans will play a pair of to-be-determined opponents on Saturday at 12:00 pm with a second match at 2:00 pm. The Spartans are attempting to win the tournament for the second consecutive season.
