YORK, PA – York College head volleyball coach Sue DuMars has announced the 2014 Spartan schedule. The schedule features a strong slate of out of conference contests and a grueling Capital Athletic Conference lineup.
DuMars and the Spartans open the season with a trip to the Moravian College Greyhound Premiere Invitational in Bethlehem, PA on August 29 and 30. The Spartans face off against Centenary (N.J.) in the tournament's opening round game following a match up against Emmanuel (Mass.) on Friday. The tournament then continues Saturday with opponents to be determined by Friday's results.
York travels to Franklin & Marshall on September 3 followed by the 2014 home opener against McDaniel one week later.
The Green and White then travels to tournaments on consecutive weekends. They head to Lycoming College for the Warrior Tip-Off Classic on September 12 and 13 in Williamsport. They face Elmira, Pitt-Bradford, Houghton and Susquehanna in the tournament. The Spartans then head to Elizabethtown on September 19 and 20 to take on Johns Hopkins, SUNY New Paltz, Lebanon Valley, and Swarthmore.
Gettysburg invades Wolf Gymnasium on September 24 as the Spartans' tour through the Centennial Conference continues.
York then hosts the 2014 York College Spartan Invitational on September 26 and 27. The Spartans tangle with Penn St.-Abington, Virginia Wesleyan, Farmingdale State, and Albright in the tournament.
October opens with a non-conference contest at former CAC foe Catholic University before the Spartans return home for a tri-meet with Mary Washington and Penn St.-Altoona on October 4. The match against Mary Washington opens the Spartans' conference schedule. Wesley comes to York on October 8 for a 7:00 pm contest.
The Green and White take to the road for a two-match conference road trip as they head to Southern Virginia on October 11 and St. Mary's on October 15. A quick trip back to York on Saturday, October 18 to host Marymount and Muhlenberg separates another quick two game trip with CAC games at Frostburg State on October 22 and Salisbury on October 25.
The Spartans conclude their regular season campaign with home games against Penn St-Harrisburg on October 29 and Christopher Newport on November 1.
The Capital Athletic Conference Tournament kicks off on Tuesday, November 4 with the tournament's opening round. The tournament semifinals will be Thursday, November 6 followed by the championship match on November 8. The winner of the tournament earns the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
"I believe our schedule will challenge us and prepare us for a difficult conference schedule," says DuMars. "I am excited to get the kids on the floor and get started working. I think we have the chance to surprise some people this year."
The Spartans open preseason camp on August 15 in Charles Wolf Gymnasium.
