Volleyball Drops Two at CNU
NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The York College volleyball squad suffered a pair of road losses on Saturday as they fell to Christopher Newport and Washington & Lee in Newport News, VA.
The match up against the Captains was a league tilt while the match against W&L was a non-conference match.
The Spartans lost to the Captains in the opener by scores of 25-16, 25-11, and 25-21. The Spartans were led by freshman standout Ijeoma Igwe (Windsor Mill, Md./Seton Keough) as she registered a team-high nine kills. Junior Kristin Martinak (Hanover, Pa./South Western) dished out 18 assists while Katherine Graziano (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) recorded a match-high 12 digs.
The Spartans hit just .010 for the match with 26 kills and 26 errors in 96 attempts.
The Captains were led by Hannah Miller as she had 11 kills and hit .318 in the win.
In the loss to the Generals, the Spartans lost by scores of 25-15, 25-12, and 25-9. Igwe again led the charge with six kills. Martinak had 12 assists while Graziano and Karli Hawxhurst (Prince Frederick, Md./Calvert) each had 10 digs.
The Green and White again struggled to put the ball away as they hit -.067 in the match with 14 kills and 20 errors in 89 attempts.
W&L had a very balanced effort with six players recording at least three kills. Meghan Meleski and M.A. Boles each had six kills for the Generals. Meleski also had 18 assists and five digs for W&L.
The Spartans fall to 15-14 overall with the two defeats as the have now lost four straight. York is now 2-4 in the CAC while CNU improves to 19-11 overall and 6-0 in the league. W&L improves to 23-6 with the win over York.
The Green and White returns to action on Thursday night when they travel to PSU Harrisburg to face the Lions in a CAC contest. Game time is set for 7:00 pm.
