YORK, PA – The York College volleyball squad picked up a much needed Capital Athletic Conference win on Thursday night in York as the Spartans downed St. Mary's 3-1.
The Spartans improve to 15-10 overall and 2-1 in the CAC while the Seahawks fall to 15-5 overall and 1-2 in the league.
York won the match by scores of 25-11, 13-25, 26-24, and 25-16.
The Spartans got off to a great start in the opening set. York ripped off an 11-2 run to open the frame. The Seahawks scored the next three points but York answered with a 7-1 run to push the lead to 18-6. The Seahawks didn't get closer than ten the rest of the set. The Spartans hit a blistering .600 for the set as they had 10 kills with just one error in 15 attempts.
The Seahawks returned the favor in the second set as they jumped out to an 8-2 lead. York cut the lead to five on five different occasions but that's as close as they would get as St. Mary's rolled to the 25-13 win.
The third set was highly entertaining and came down to the wire. Neither team led by more than two points until the Seahawks pulled out to a 19-16 edge. St. Mary's would push the Spartans to the brink as they led 24-20 and looked poised to take the 2-l advantage. York roared back with a 6-0 run fueled by junior Katie Huston (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) as the Green and White stole the set, 26-24.
The Green and White carried the momentum of the third set into the fourth as they raced out to a quick lead. The Seahawks tied the set at six and the two squads would go back and forth over the next 10 points. There were four ties and three lead changes over that 10 point span. The set was tied at 11 when the Spartans slowly started to pull away. With York leading 17-15, the Spartans went on an 8-1 run to close out the win.
Huston and freshman Ijeoma Igwe (Windsor Mill, Md./Seton Keough) powered a resurgent Spartan offense as they both drilled home 14 kills. Huston hit .407 in the win while Igwe hit .393 in the win. Sophomore Alison Dorsey (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) added nine kills to the Spartan attack.
Junior Kristin Martinak (Hanover, Pa./South Western) handed out a career-high 44 assists while she also had six digs, two service aces and a kill. Sophomore Katherine Graziano (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) recorded a match-high 18 digs while she also had a match-high four service aces.
Mandy Goodspeed led the Seahawks with nine kills while Michelle Klima added seven kills of her own. Mimi Graf distributed 14 assists while Elaina Straub had 10 assists of her own. Carissa Hill led the St. Mary's defense with 17 digs.
The Spartans hit .268 for the match with 50 kills while St. Mary's hit .224 with 34 kills in 85 attempts.
York returns to action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Marymount University to face the Saints in a Capital Athletic Conference contest. The match is slated for a 12:00 pm start in Arlington, VA.
