FREDERICKSBURG, VA – The York College Spartans dropped their fourth straight match as they fell to the University of Mary Washington 3-0 in the Capital Athletic Conference opener for both squads on Wednesday night in Fredericksburg, VA.
The Spartans fall to 12-8 overall and 0-1 in the league while the Eagles improve to 9-5 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
The set scores were 25-23, 25-18, and 25-15.
The Eagles were led by Alexis Cummings as she hit .324 with 19 kills in 37 attempts. Kaitlyn Wickersham added 16 kills and nine digs as she notched a .371 attack percentage. Emma Olson handed out 32 assists and drilled home four service aces. Caroline Porco led the Eagles with 10 digs.
The Spartans got a team-high 10 kills from sophomore Alison Dorsey (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) as the Spartans only had 29 kills in the match. Freshman Ijeoma Igwe (Windsor Mill, Md./Seton Keough) contributed six kills to the Spartan attack.
Senior Brittany Hicks (Dover, Pa./York Catholic) led the defense with seven digs while she also had four kills. Sophomore Allie Donahue (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) had 18 assists and five digs for York.
The Spartans hit .205 in the loss but had six service errors and were aced by the Eagles 10 times. Mary Washington hit .277 in the win.
The Spartans have lost six of their last eight after their red-hot 10-2 start.
York returns home on Saturday for a pair of Fall Fest contests. The Spartans host Southern Virginia at 1:00 pm followed by a non-conference match against Dickinson at 5:00 pm. Southern Virginia and Dickinson will play at 3:00 pm.
