YORK, PA – The York College volleyball squad opened their 2013 York College Spartan Volleyball Invitational with a 3-0 defeat of Penn State Abington on Friday evening in York.
The Spartans improve to 12-4 overall while the Lions fall to 7-11. The game scores were 25-14, 25-12, and 25-19
The Green and White got off to a strong start in the opening set as they sprinted out to an 8-2 lead. The Lions would eventually trim the York lead to one at 10-9 but York responded with a big 11-2 spurt keyed by the service of setter Allie Donahue (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin). Donahue served five straight points for York including a pair of aces as the Green and White seized control of the set. York scored four of the final seven points of the stanza to earn the 25-14 set one win.
In set two, the Spartans jumped out to another 8-2 lead to set the early tone. York built the lead to seven before the Lions trimmed the Spartan advantage to four at 13-9. York put the set out of reach as they scored 12 of the final 15 points of the set to take a comfortable 2-0 lead.
In the third set, the Lions made life a little more difficult on York as they pushed out to an early 11-6 lead. York used a 6-1 spurt to tie the game at 12. The teams went back and forth for the next 13 points before the Spartans went on a 4-0 run to take a 21-17 lead. York went on to score four of the final six points of the match to seal the win.
The Spartans were led by senior Brittany Hicks (Dover, Pa./York Catholic) as she drilled home seven kills to pace the Green and White. Hicks added seven digs and a service ace for York. Katie Huston (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron), Ijeoma Igwe (Windsor Mill, Md./Seton Keough), and Amanda Mackey (Whiteford, Md./North Harford) each added two kills for York.
Donahue dished out 19 assists in two sets while she also had nine digs and three kills, and a pair of service aces. Katherine Graziano (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) tied Donahue for the game-high in digs with nine.
The Spartans return to action at 9:00 pm in the second round of the tournament. York entertains 13-3 Carnegie Mellon in what should be an entertaining match.
