Spartans Go 1-1 Saturday in Elizabethtown
ELIZABETHTOWN, PA – The York College volleyball squad finished day two of the Days Inn Blue Jay Classic with a mark of 1-1. The Spartans defeated the University of Rochester before falling to SUNY Cortland in the second match. York finished the tournament with a mark of 2-2.
In the win over Rochester, the Spartans won the match 25-23, 25-17, and 25-16. York received balanced offensive effort led by senior Brittany Hicks (Dover, Pa./York Catholic). Hicks finished the match with nine kills and 14 digs for the Spartans. Freshman Ijeoma Igwe (Windsor Mill, Md./Seton Keough) added seven kills, two solo blocks, and four digs. Junior Katie Huston (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) contributed six kills, nine digs, two solo blocks, two block assists, and a service ace.
Sophomore setter Allie Donahue (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) handed out 27 assists while she also had three kills, two service aces, and a pair of solo blocks. Libero Katherine Graziano (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) led York's defense with a match-high 23 digs.
Savannah Benton led the Yellow Jackets with a match-high 11 kills while Meghan Connor recorded a team-high 15 digs. Xiaoyi Li had 26 assists for Rochester.
Against Cortland, the Red Dragons notched the 27-25, 25-15, 22-25, 25-17 victory. Igwe powered the Spartans with 12 kills while Hicks added nine of her own. Senior Amanda Mackey (Whiteford, Md./North Harford) added eight kills as she hit .350 for the match.
Donahue recorded 40 assists, 12 digs, four kills, a solo block and a service ace for the Spartans. Graziano added 14 digs for York.
Cortland had three players reach double figures in kills led by Kin Givelechian. Setter Liz Roberts had 46 assists and 14 digs while Melanie McGuirk had a match-high 15 digs.
Mackey earned All-Tournament team honors as she hit .319 for the weekend with 30 kills and eight errors in 69 attempts. Donahue led the tournament with 168 assists, good for an average of 10.50 assists per game. Donahue also led the tournament with 11 service aces in 16 games. Graziano was second in the tournament in digs as she averaged 5.44 per game.
The Spartans return to action on Friday night when they host Penn State Abington in the opening round of the York College Spartan Volleyball Classic. The two-day tournament kicks off Friday afternoon at 3:00 pm at Charles Wolf Gymnasium.
