Spartans Spike Blazers in 2013 Home Opener

YORK, PA – The York College volleyball squad opened their home campaign in impressive fashion as they blanked Hood College 3-0 in a non-conference contest on Wednesday night in York.

The game scores were 25-14, 25-15, and 25-16. The Spartans are now 9-2 while the Blazers fall to 4-6. The nine wins for the Spartans tie their season total from last fall.

In the opening set, the Spartans and Blazers were tied at four. York went on a 7-1 run and the Blazers would not get to within four the rest of the set as York took the early lead. The second set was almost identical in its start as the teams were again knotted at four only to have the Spartans fashion a 7-0 spurt, as York would cruise to a game two victory. York trailed early in the third set as the Blazers pushed out to a 7-4 lead. The Spartans answered with an 8-1 run to turn the deficit into a 12-8 lead. The York lead would not fall below three as York cruised to the nine-point win.

Freshman Ijema Igwe (Windsor Mill, Md./Seton Keough) led the Spartans with 11 kills in 19 attempts as she hit a blistering .421 for the match. Sophomore Emma Geisser (Rockville, Md./Magruder) added nine kills in 15 attempts as she hit .533 in the win. Sophomore Allie Donahue (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) dished out 23 assists in the win in addition to drilling home three service aces. Sophomore Cassie Miller (Odenton, Md./Arundel) led the defensive effort with eight digs for York.

The Spartans had 12 players record at least one kill in the win while ten players notched at least one dig. York hit a season-high .337 as a team.

Hayley Rogers, Amy Hagerdon, and Addie Roop led the Blazers with three kills each. Kathryn Jones handed out seven assists and recorded four digs for the Blazers.

The Spartans return to action on Friday when they travel to Elizabethtown to participate in the Blue Jay Classic. York faces host Elizabethtown at 2:30 pm and then play Cairn at 4:30 pm.
