Spartans Bounce Bullets in Five Set Thriller

GETTYSBURG, PA  - The York College volleyball team continued their strong early season play with a dramatic 3-2 win over Gettysburg in a tense five set thriller on Wednesday evening at Bream Gymnasium in Gettysburg, PA.

The Spartans improve to 8-2 overall, as they now are just one victory short of tying last year's win total of nine. Gettysburg falls to 5-4 overall.

The Spartans dropped the first set 27-25 before winning games two and three 25-21 and 25-17. The Bullets forced a fifth set with a 25-20 win in set four before the Spartans won the match with a come-from-behind 16-14 win in the decisive final set.

The Spartans were paced by the trio of senior Brittany Hicks (Dover, Pa./York Catholic), freshman Ijeoma Igwe (Windsor Mill, Md./Seton Keough), and junior Katie Huston (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron). Hicks registered a new career high with 15 kills while she also registered 12 digs. Huston had a double double of her own with 11 kills and 12 digs while she also had a solo block and two block assists. Igwe recorded 12 kills for the Green and White.

Sophomore setter Allie Donahue (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) dished out 40 assists with three kills, eight digs, and a service ace. Sophomore Katherine Graziano (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) paced the Spartan defense with 26 digs.

Sophomore Emma Geisser (Rockville, Md./Magruder) played a key role in the fifth game as she came off the bench with the Spartans trailing 10-6 in the set. The Spartans finish the set on a 10-4 to earn the win. Geisser had two kills and a number of key plays during the run to help spur the Spartans to the win.

Sarah Gorski led the Bullets with 13 kills and four block assists. Kelly Milone dished out 24 assists and registered a match-high five service aces. Hannah Bentz recorded a team-high 19 digs for the Bullets.

Neither team was particularly efficient on offense as York hit .091 with 60 kills and 44 errors in 175 attempts while Gettysburg hit .079 with 32 kills and 21 errors in 139 attempts. The Spartans did save their best attack set for the final set as they hit .185 with 11 kills and six errors in 27 attempts.

York is now off until next Wednesday when they host Hood College in their home opener at Charles Wolf Gymnasium. The match is slated for a 7:00 pm start.
