Volleyball Pulls Out Exciting Road Win at McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, MD – The York College volleyball team continued its hot start to 2013 with a tense 3-1 victory at McDaniel College on Wednesday night in non-conference action in Westminster, MD.

The Spartans improve to 5-0 overall as it is the Green and White's first 5-0 start since 2002. McDaniel falls to 2-1 overall. York won the match by scores of 18-25, 25-22, 28-26, and 29-27.

After the Green Terror captured the opening set, the Spartans got back into the match with a strong second set. The Green and White built a 24-17 lead but McDaniel raced back into the set before the Spartans held on for the three-point win.

The next two sets featured back and forth play as neither squad held more than a five-point margin in either game. The Spartans pushed ahead in the third, capturing the win on back-to-back kills from freshman Ijeoma Igwe (Windsor Mill, Md./Seton Keough).

In the fourth set, the two teams again battled back and forth. The Spartans winned the set thanks to an Igwe kills, a pair of Katie Huston (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) service aces and a Green Terror attack error.

Igwe registered a career-high 15 kills as the freshman hit .206 for the match. She also had a solo block and four block assists. Sophomore Emma Geisser (Rockville, Md./Magruder) added 10 kills and nine digs for the Green and White. Sophomore Allie Donahue (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) continued her outstanding early season play as she handed out a match-high 40 assists while she also had eight digs, four kills, and three service aces.

Sophomore Katherine Graziano (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) led the Spartan defense with 15 digs. Sophomore Alison Dorsey (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) contributed five kills, two solo blocks and four block assists.

Kloe Martin led the Green Terror with a match-high 17 kills while she also had six digs, and four service aces. Madeline Rose chipped in with 11 kills while Collette Kellen handed out a team-high 24 assists. Genna Weger led the McDaniel defense with 13 digs.

The Spartans hit .112 for the match while McDaniel hit .145 in the loss.

The Green and White returns to action this weekend when the Spartans travel to the Lebanon Valley College Invitational. The Spartans play Lebanon Valley and Franklin & Marshall on Friday evening at 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm. The Spartans then face Central Penn and Penn State Altoona on Saturday at 11:00 am and 3:00 pm.
